We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Collison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of advice that I’ve received throughout multiple apprenticeships is to “toughen up” or develop thick skin. In my experience, clients appreciate me as a service provider because we can empathize with one another and tend to feel more comfortable with someone who might be traditionally perceived as “soft”. I’ve grown to love that about myself and I’ve curated a clientele who seems to really like that about me, as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a tattoo artist working in Boulder, Colorado. I’ve been tattooing for 2.5 years and about 1.5 years professionally. I specialize in botanical/nature tattoos as well as whimsical illustrative tattoos. I love to add some type of witchy, feminine or magical touch to the art that I create but certainly plan on growing and expanding in the future. I’ve gone through three different apprenticeships and like most apprenticeships, they were hard! However, I’ve learned and grown as a person, artist and service provider throughout all of them. I’ve been working at Love You Tattoo in Boulder since Cori James opened the shop in September and I feel so blessed to be apart of this space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For my favorite spots in Boulder I’d say to check out the Hill if you’re trying to drink, and Chautauqua if you’ve never been to Boulder but are longing for those classic mountain views. For Denver I love scooting around the ballpark area and cheesman park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to Love You Tattoo in Boulder and all of the fantastic artists that work there! You can find us on Instagram @loveyoutattoo_boulder and I highly encourage everyone to follow the shop page as well as all of our artists. Such a fantastic crew of artists!
