We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I think something that most people don’t consider about being a small business photographer is how much effort goes in to everything that isn’t taking pictures. Photographing clients is a pretty small part of the process proportionally. A lot of time and energy goes in to managing my portfolio and marketing endeavors through my website, and social media platforms. I spend a lot of time doing correspondence with potential clients, preparing them for their sessions and creating realistic expectations for what their time with me will be like. I put a lot of effort into making sure my licensure, permits, domains and insurance coverage are current, as well as scouting locations, getting inspiration from other artists and learning new skills. Capturing images is the reason behind the efforts, but editing, organizing, uploading and delivering galleries, as well as everything else that goes into running a small business, takes considerably more time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been passionate about art and photography, and it has always been my dream to become a professional artist. When my children were born, I wanted to capture our own memories in a beautiful and meaningful way, and doing so for others fit mostly into our schedule as a family, and thus my business was born. Managing work and home life has been my greatest challenge in pursuing a career as an artist. It has necessitated deliberate and effective organization and time management on my part. It has meant late nights after bedtimes, and early mornings before sunrise. It has meant missing weekends together, and sometimes months where I am not as available as I would like to be. I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish though, and I am so grateful for my family for supporting me in achieving my goals.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Estes Park to see the Stanley Hotel where the shining was filmed, and then to RMNP to hike to around Bear Lake. We would have lunch at Claire’s, and head South to Red Rocks to catch an evening show. If we had several days, I would love to take them to the Garden of the Gods, or Boulder to shop on Pearl Street and Hike up into the Flatirons there. I also love a Benny duo from Snooze in Union Square in downtown Denver.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Jon, my Dad, and my family deserve a big shoutout for supporting me, guiding me, and encouraging me to pursue my dreams of being a professional artist.
