We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was creating a business of support for moms and caregivers. Heirloom was started in Feb 2021, about a year after the birth of my first child, Calvin, and my mom receiving an ALS diagnosis. There was very suddenly a huge demand for quality time with my baby and with my mom. As well as a ticking clock to experience the joys of babyhood, and to spend time with someone with ALS.
I left my career as the General Manager at a busy catering company to spend time with my family at this important time. However, I found myself missing the stimulation, rewards, relationships of my work.
Today’s work environment, the hustle culture, the 9-5 or the long hours, we all find ourselves in does not align with the realities of parenting and caregiving. Two things that are typically only a blip of time in a very long career.
Therefore, Heirloom was formed in hopes of representing a new work environment. One that is supportive of moms, dads, caregivers, and those that need the extra time and understanding during these few years of their life. The wedding industry is a perfect model as it is scalable, the first year I had 6 weddings, and the next I had 14, as life continues there will be time for more. However, because of Heirloom, I was blessed to be home with my baby (who’s now in preschool) and my mom (who has now passed) during those years. I hope to provide this opportunity to others, and then benefit from happy, loyal, productive, and cared for employees as they emerge from these critical years.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Heirloom is about honesty and design. We want to be there for you as you plan your wedding as a guide. As someone you can call when you get stuck. We aim to be honest about what will work, what we don’t recommend, what it will cost, just providing the truth in both facts and offering our professional opinions.
It is a team of women with an incredible eye for design. In the typical sense of color, textures, balance, etc… but also the design of well-planned systems to bring a very big day, with so many very important and intricate details together. We are curators of the perfect timeline, the exquisite table settings, the most beautiful days@ The definition of design: to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s Colorado! First, the city. Second, the mountains. I love the small neighborhoods tucked in and around the metro area. I love the small strips of street with coffee shops, ice cream, local brunch, such as in Highlands, Wash Park, South Broadway. Any of those deserve a block of time to stroll and see what we happen upon. And then to the mountains! Any mountain town in Colorado is a dream, I love Estes Park, Georgetown and Frisco. Again, a walk through town to find a great restaurant.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out Brene Brown. Her teachings, findings, and views are constantly running through my head. The idea of leading with vulnerability will truly change our workforce. Grappling with shame is hard. I find myself feeling ashamed of the fewer weddings I have, when others have so many more. I love my work and it consumes me in the best way. However, I need to remember to be vulnerable and know what I am capable of during this phase in my life. I love Brene Brown. Everyone should know her name and her work.
