We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Picart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business started out as a hobby with creating pieces for myself and close friends. This evolved into being something I was super passionate about because it not only provided a creative outlet but it connected me with the opportunity to offer an intimate experience where individuals see themselves in a new and profound way. From there the business side came naturally as I wanted to expand this experience for anyone and everyone interested in a leather accessory.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Today in the world of fashion and accessories, a lot of items are unattainable to some because of use of size restrictions. I think what sets me apart from others is that I offer custom sizing where everything is made to your specific and individual measurements. I want anyone to be able to wear my leather products and I think it is necessary for brands to be inclusive and accommodating to all sizes as we are all unique and beautifully different.

I am most excited about growing my business. I have so many ideas and I can’t wait to put things into action. I am proud of how much I have already accomplished in the few short years of Bellator Leather’s conception but I am constantly thinking of the next step and how I can grow.

I have learned many lessons along the way as a one-woman business owner but I think the most important thing that I find myself coming back to is that you are only one human. You cannot do everything you want to get done at the same time. Structure a schedule, make lists, evaluate priorities, and ask for help when you need it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So many fun places to visit in Denver but I would have to take them to see some art! Ryan Joseph Gallery off 38th Ave is a go-to when my friends are in town. The gallery is free and open to the public with some of the coolest collections you will see in the area. I would also recommend a trip to Meow Wolf where you can spend a few hours losing yourself in an immersive and highly interactive art experience. Finish off the day in the River North Arts District where you can mosey around the alleyways and peep murals of graffiti art that cover the city. Pop into Denver Market Place if you need a quick drink or bite! I tell everyone to save their appetite and make a reservation for some of the best sushi you will try at Temaki Den in the Source Hotel. Expect to splurge because you seriously can’t resist trying all the specialty nigiri and handrolls this place has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people who have astronomically contributed to the success of my business. My good friend Taelor Brody was there from the beginning of Bellator Leather and has continuously promoted my products which turn into direct sales for my business. I can’t thank her enough for being not only a muse, but a great support system and friend along the way.

My roommate and friend Jarred Trantham of Lost Sailor Leather has been a huge factor of my success lately and has helped elevate my business as a whole. His knowledge, experience, and motivation have pushed my skills and craft to new levels. Thanks Jarred for everything you do for me and Bellator. Team Takiki!

My partner Jesse Caban is constantly pushing me to do more and I am so lucky to have someone like that in my corner. His out-of-the-box thinking and ambitious attitude help to keep my goals big, attainable, and accountable.

I also want to say a big shout-out to all the photographers and models who have created with me. They help create the vision and keep the brand alive, which I am so thankful for!
