We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Luecke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe risk taking — while often uncomfortable — is necessary if we truly want to make a positive and lasting difference in the world. I once read a quote by Christian author and pastor, Eric Ludy, who said, “We should always remember and never forget that those who risk for nothing, commit to nothing, and stand for nothing in the end rarely accomplish anything.” In the biblical account of David & Goliath, there was tremendous risk for a young shepherd boy (David) to go up against the seasoned warrior giant (Goliath). Yet when his brother approached him with both criticism and skepticism, David responded: “Is there not a cause?” Risk taking of course must be coupled with wisdom — but I think the world needs more people like David who are willing to take risks for worthy causes.
Risk taking has played a significant role in my personal life and career. It was a risk to move to Europe 6+ years ago, but if I hadn’t I would have never met the Ukrainian little girl who now calls me mommy. It’s this same little girl who has now inspired us to launch a work to reach Ukraine’s most vulnerable, at-risk, and impoverished people groups.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We believe that every human life has infinite value and worth. Every human life from conception to final breath is worth fighting for. Every human life is precious and lovingly created and designed by God. Every life, one life – matters. One Life Matters exists to love, serve, and reach society’s most vulnerable and at-risk people groups. From the unborn to the elderly in the USA to the abandoned, orphaned, and special needs children in Ukraine and the impoverished Roma communities therein, we aim to bring holistic care and solutions to the poor and marginalized both locally and internationally. At the center of it all, we want every life to be reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The needs in Ukraine are both heart-breaking and great. While I am grateful to have already met so many wonderful people building beautiful works to bring about change, there is so much more that needs to be done. We are committed to establishing a home for abandoned and/or orphaned children as well as launching a pediatric therapy center in the western region of Ukraine. Among other outreaches, we also aim to come alongside a Ukrainian NGO to help them plant schools in Roma (gypsy) villages that would be based off of the Montessori-pedagogy method. We want every child to have the opportunity to reach their full potential!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am deeply honoured to have co-founded One Life Matters alongside my parents, Gary & Diane Luecke. While their love and support has always been a steady anchor in my life, it is ultimately their example to follow Jesus – no matter what the risk or cost involved — that has left a lasting and profound impact.
