We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Strassberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I actually used to be a corporate event planner, and obviously when the pandemic hit, events changed drastically. Everything went virtual and the parts of my job I enjoyed doing (like interacting with people, etc.) was no longer a thing! And I also had eight different managers in the five years I was with my last company and that was the nail in the coffin on corporate life for me! So I decided to just take a leap and start my own business.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Weathered Wick is a create your own candle experience! We allow our customers to select the vessel they want to make the candle in and create a signature fragrance blend that’s unique to them, then we help them assemble the candle. We’re not like your typical class or workshop though. Each group who books an appointment will have a dedicated staff member, making the experience much more intimate and high-end. We’ve intentionally created a culture & vibe here, and that makes the world of difference. When people walk in to the space they can immediately sense the warm, welcoming & joyful energy! And the same goes for our staff – I was very particular about the people who would represent our brand and we have been so fortunate to get the best of the best. They make the entire experience next level! We’re a locally owned, woman owned, small business and we’re very proud of that! Of course, we’ve learned a lot along the way but that’s what it’s all about. Learning and growing and bringing joy to our customers!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well the candles you make with us take three hours to cure! So planning a day or night in LoHi Denver is our bread & butter. If you want to do a daytime appointment, we alwaaays recommend popping over to The Green Collective for an iced coffee & healthy late breakfast/early lunch – they have the most delicious and healthy options. If you’re more of a late afternoon person, start with happy hour at Senor Bear (the queso is a must) or Postino (the boards are the way to go here) then come to your appointment at The Weathered Wick at 4pm! While your candles cure from 5-8pm you can venture to one of the MANY incredible restaurants nearby. A few of our favorites are The Fifth String, El Five, Uncle Ramen or Happy Camper! Then you of course have to indulge your sweet tooth with an ice cream cone from Little Man – the banana pudding flavor is simply sinful if you haven’t tried it!

A few other spots in the area we’re a big fan of are: Quality Italian in the Halcyon hotel in Cherry Creek (check out their rooftop for the best views of downtown Denver), Five Nines is a swanky speakeasy feeling cocktail bar with great music and unexpected entertainment, Perdida is the cutest decorated restaurant and transports you to southern California or Mexico which we love, Wildflower, Linger, My Neighbor Felix, a leisurely walk around Sloan’s Lake, there’s just too many to name!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents & husband have had my back and supported me since I had the first thoughts of opening this business! I could not have accomplished everything I have in our first 7 months of being open without their support and help along the way. Also, my incredible team! They’re truly the best and I am so so lucky, blessed and grateful to have them – Amanda, Julia, Kyla, Eden, Gabby & Brenna!
