Meet Erin Jachimiak | Mama, Photographer & Storyteller of honest, imperfect moments

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Jachimiak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
To get out of my own way. In whatever way is appropriate in the given situation. Sometimes it is imposter syndrome, other times it is being a willing participant to be on the other side of the camera. Excuses are easier sometimes than actually getting out of our own way. The reality is that people hire me because of MY vision, MY art, not because it looks like (insert other amazing photographer). Not only do I deserve to be in the frames on my walls, I owe it to my children to be in the albums that they will look at in 30 years when they want to remember their childhood. That tangible proof that we as mothers exist. I am constantly telling my clients this, I need to practice what I preach. Easier said than done, but we are all a work in progress right?!?

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I find beauty in simplicity, emotion, connection, and beautiful light. I believe that every family has a wonderful story to be told, and my desire is to create enduring portraits that are not only beautiful but emotionally moving as well. My images are filled with connections, movement, and moments unique to your story. A session with me is wholly focused on taking the time to slow down and really appreciate the long embraces and the art of discovery. I am truly interested in storytelling. When I first started out, it was hard to really dial into this – for me to have the confidence in my art to be more of an observer, rather than telling my clients what to do and how to look. Those early sessions, while beautiful in their own way, were not filling my cup. There was something missing. I will admit that imposter syndrome was front and center – why can’t my images look as beautiful and natural as (insert photographer). It really wasn’t until I learned to let go and embrace each session dynamic as something truly special and unique that the magic happened. Also, staying off of social media and not comparing myself to others, haha. This is when my business really soared. Now, I spend a lot of time preparing my clients before our time together, so there are no surprises when we meet. I feel as though its important for me to educate them on my vision and my style so that if I am not a good fit for them, I can help them find someone who is.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ummmm so I am old now haha and a fun night out for me ends around 8 pm so that I can go home and go to bed. So fun right????? My kids know not to ask me for anything after 8:30 because it is likely I am in bed reading. Seriously though, if you are a foodie Denver is the place – some of my favorite restaurants are Blackbelly in Boulder, Santos (same chef as Blackbelly) also in Boulder, Culinary Dropout in Denver, and I have never met a wine bar I didnt like. A little day hike out at Red Rocks or South Mesa trail in Boulder boasts some pretty epic Colorado Scenery too. There is some great local shopping on Pearl Street in Boulder or in the Highlands in Denver. If you are lucky enough to catch a concert at Red Rocks or a summer movie on the rocks those should make the to do list too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t say there is 1 person. My family is who deserves the recognition. They supported me when I had to miss a soccer game, a school event or the occasional Sunday family dinner because I was trying to make this passion project of mine a legit money-making business. My kids will never get how much it meant to be that, despite all of the complaining and whining, they never said no when I needed a model or someone to go location scouting with me. My husband never once complained when he had to pick up the slack and make dinner or take (insert kid) to practice or a doctor’s. appointment so that I could get a session scheduled. It all seemed so little at the time, but really, it was all of those little things that made it so that I could get to where I am today. Where I can pick and choose what sessions I want to take, and only work certain days so that I dont have to miss any more family stuff. When I first started this, I never thought that it would be alive and thriving all these years later. For that, I am forever grateful.
