We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Lassahn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It didn’t feel like there was any alternative other than pursuing something in the arts! My whole life I have gravitated towards the arts and anything creative; be it drawing, painting, sewing, singing, dancing – I have done it all. I am not sure I would be successful doing something non-arts related, but thankfully I have enjoyed being a photographer for 17 years now, and have several artistic hobbies as well. It’s so gratifying to be able to create tangible, and intagible things to create joy for clients, and myself alike!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Anyone in Colorado knows there are hundreds, if not thousands of wonderfully talented photographers. I have always struggled with the ‘what sets you apart’ question, because in this day and age, I am not sure if any one of us is truly markedly different from another in this field. But hope if you were to ask any client of mine the same question about me, they might answer with something along the lines of, ‘She makes it easy, fun, and we love our photos.’ That’s all I hope for!

I have worked my way through these last many years with lots of trials and errors, slow years and busy years, and good decisions and bad decisions. That said I think most of my success can be attributed to the fact that I just keep going. I have learned it’s important to go with the flow, be flexible, and not give up when things don’t go your way.

I love the loyal clients I have, but I love meeting new clients as well. My favorite part of the whole job is capturing the joyful moments in someones life. I love documenting growing kids, and growing relationships. Artistically, my approach is to document as organically as possible while guiding clients instructively for the best interactions with their loved ones.

I enjoy trying new things with my work, coming up with creative angles, poses and using modifiers to artistically enhance my photos.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s a lot to do, see and eat here, so sometimes it’s hard to narrow it down! It’s always worth it to take a drive to the mountains, to see Rocky Mountain National Park, or up to Summit County to enjoy the views and activities in Frisco or Breck. Here in town, dinner at Le Colonial is divine, and a fun tropical cocktail at Adrift Tiki bar would be nice when the weather is not so great, or even when it is! Meow Wolf of course is a one of a kind experience, and all our concert venues are great so I always love taking a friend to a show at the Fillmore, Summit Music Hall or even Red Rocks. On the more relaxed side, bringing a friend for a ‘Give it a Try’ night at City Mud or Community Clay pottery studios is a fun experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think first and foremost, at 17 years in, I have to dedicate this to my clients who continue to put their trust in me to document the most important stages and moments in their lives. Without these wonderful and loyal clients, I wouldn’t have a business or a career to write about. My husband and children are also crucial support systems, and have become accustomed to my odd working hours, nights and weekends where I am away, and plenty of days and seasons where I perpetually have a laptop in front of me editing image after image.
