We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Otmishi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s who I am. Growing up I’ve always been creative. I loved the feeling of creating something, making it how I want and see it. I’ve always loved painting and that’s where I mostly work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am inspired by nature a lot. When I was in high school our art teacher would be doing taxidermy in the back of the classroom and he also had piles of National Geographic magazines everywhere. So I would flip through the magazines and look at all the pictures from around the world which had a lot of animal pictures. I then practiced drawing them. I also love the renaissance period and I think that influences my art. I appreciate all aspects of art from Graffiti to pottery. What sets me apart is I do an array of things, I like to try different things. Starting out I was lucky to get a spot at a local pizzeria place in Indianapolis, In. I was able to sell my art there. We moved around and I participated in art shows in Los Angeles, and in Dana Point. And continue to work and improve. I’ve learned a lot along the way. I try to stick with my gut feeling.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Colorado Springs and we love to take people to Garden of the Gods, then drive over to Manitou Springs. You can find a lot of cool art in Manitou Springs and shops. Another nice place to hike and picnic is North Cheyenne Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Sam. He has been behind me 100%. He encourages me to follow my passion for art and painting. He is my muse and inspiration in a lot of my work.
