We had the good fortune of connecting with Eryn Weems and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eryn, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
A major part of the Montessori philosophy is practicing grace and courtesy in all things. This is not only a gift for our students, but the adults in our community as well. Because we are constantly demonstrating how to be courteous and kind to the children in our care, the habits spill over into every area of my life, including business practices. I have learned from my Mom and mentor teachers that a thank you card and flowers leave a lasting impression on one’s heart. I continue to develop the habit of showing gratitude in every interaction. People loved to feel loved and appreciated. I have found that practicing grace and courtesy builds relationships and bridges with community faster than any other means.

What should our readers know about you and your business?

I am a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado and my journey to finding Montessori has been an adventure to say the least! After serving in the Air Force as an Intelligence Analyst in the D.C. Metropolitan area for over 10 years, I realized I was not satisfied. I decided to pursued a A.A. in Culinary Arts, where I met the love of my life! I then moved back to the Springs and started a small business. Still craving passion, I stumbled upon my true calling, Montessori! I dove deep into research and exploration of pedagogy and found that the Montessori Method aligned directly with my personal beliefs, values, and goals.

I am completely overwhelmed and grateful for the opportunity to Co-Found Mountain Willow Montessori (MWM). My partner, Melody Cully and I have worked diligently to bring a fresh approach to the Montessori pedagogy to the Colorado Springs area. Our community school offers the highest quality preschool education for our students. MWM works to develop the “whole-child” as we offer our students violin lessons, gardening, in-house play therapist, Spanish-immersion program and so much more. Additionally, we have partnered with community establishments like Who Gives A Scrap, The Living Room, The Fulson Company, Pike Peak Artist Collective and several others to create a one-of-a-kind experience for our community families.

Our dream for Mountain Willow Montessori has not been without its own struggles. We have faced issues with our original locator, funding shortages, and personal changes. Nevertheless, our team has rallied and learned to develop resilience! We have a true passion for the Montessori Method. Our team rest on our belief that we can greatly impact the community and world through our approach. I understand that our calling is greater than our obstacles.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a native of the Springs, I have been thrilled to watch our city thrive! When I have guests in town our first stop is always a delicious brunch at the Garden of the Gods Cafe. We then stroll on over to The Living Room to peruse the amazing plant selection and purchase one, two, or seven new plants for my collection. And right next door is the most charming bookshop in the city, A likely Story. I could spend hours there, surrounded by the beautifully curated library and cozy ambiance. Of course, Manitou Springs is a must! I always have guests stop in SunWater Spa for a luxurious mineral soak in the hot springs. While there, the Town House is a great spot for a nice drink and yummy appetizers. Bear Creek Park and the Garden of the Gods are great hikes that get the whole family moving. And if it is a Sunday, we definitely hit a service at Zeal Church for an incredible worship experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

All praise and glory to my creator, Yahweh. I walk in continuous gratitude for my husband LaGarian Weems and my beautiful children, who are my inspiration, and motivation! I have been blessed with the most wonderful, supportive, and loving parents on the planet, Jaki and McKinley Taggart! And cheers to my secret sauce; Jocelyn, Amanda, Jennifer, and Cecilia.

I am forever grateful for my amazing partner Melody Cully and her incredible family!

And finally, I am tremendously grateful for my Montessori community, Susie and David Shelton-Dodge, Lynn Rouke, Elizabeth Trujillo, Sapna Singa, and countless other incredible Montessorian that have supported me throughout my journey.  Additionally, all our local teams, Alliance for Kids, Joint Initiatives, SBDC and IREE have been a tremendous support from conception!
