We had the good fortune of connecting with Fatima Alhexia Boylen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fatima Alhexia, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Before getting married, I lived in Guatemala, where my family eats black beans with warm corn “thick” tortillas, dance marimba and salsa, hug big, laugh loud, have coffee for dinner and unannounced visitors are cheerfully welcomed! I was raised with family rules like: be respectful to others, be kind, smile, study hard, do your best, help senior citizens, enjoy life, be grateful, live in the present, people are more important than things, do not take what is not yours, don’t be attached to material things or money, instead give it to the ones that need it more than you, say hi and good by with the longest, strongest hugs, AND “lo ponemos en las manos de Dios” (it’s in God’s hands) for whatever goal is being planned.

Resilience and kindness had been esencial in the success of my entrepreneurial career with Boylen Cleaning Services, a janitorial business that started from scratch in 2016 and had grown thanks to the word-of-mouth referrals to clean office buildings, churches, non profits, restaurants, dentists, banks, gyms, residences, real estate etc.

When I had just moved to Colorado, my english was not good, I didn’t know how to use a vacuum or had money to invest in the business. Now, I am blessed with a growing business, great team members, clients, mentors, connections and friends who continuously challenge me to step up the ladder in the cleaning industry and help others achieve their goals, too.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My journey as a female naturalized american entrepreneur started with many challenges and 21hrs work shift. I still picture in my mind the very first time I did a professional cleaning to a small office. I arrived to the client’s facility on a Sunday evening, very excited and with a big smile. On one hand a bucket full of rags and “fabuloso”. On the other hand, a mop and a broom. When I came into the office I realized I needed to figure out how to operate a machine called “vacuum” for my first time ever…7 hours later I was done with the cleaning, exhausted and feeling that my wrists were going to break…

They next day when I called the client to check how she liked the cleaning, She happily said: This is great, our office has never been this cleaned! How long did it take you? She asked, and I, feeling so proud of myself said: 7 hours! We both got silent for a second, then with a big laughter the client expressed: That’s why! The previous crew only took 20 minutes to clean this place…

And that’s the beginning of my new endeavor…(ah, and I got paid $35 for that service, lol.)

Well, it may seem like a failed start but the good reputation I gained in the first service, was what started the word of mouth referrals to clean houses of the people who worked at that office and then referrals to clean other business, charging fair amounts.

Hard work, optimism, kindness, faith in God had help the growth of my business BOYLEN CLEANING SERVICES and now a days those values are key points for the culture of my business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Running my own business has given me the opportunity to drive and get to know several places. Experiencing the four seasons in Colorado is a life changing experience that refreshes the soul. The beautiful scenery in Conifer, Evergreen, Golden, Lakewood and Denver are enjoyable all year around. The diversity of multicultural cuisine is available everywhere in the State. Sunsets and Sunrises are magnificent when watched from any of the almost 18,000 hiking trails. Aspen, Red Rock Amphitheater, Downtown Denver, Clear Creek River in Golden, Dinosaur Ridge, Buffalo Bills Museum, Molly Brown House, zoo and museums.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for crossing paths with entities in Colorado such as Mi Casa Resource Center, SBA, Score, Young Catholic Professionals, the Catholic Church, Public Libraries, Energize Colorado and specifically I’m thankful to Dick Feischman, Leslie Prevish, Monique Lovato, Nishana John, Luis Moreno, Claudia Yanez, Father Miljenko Pavkociv, Deacon Mike Fletcher, my Husband Chris Boylen and many other amazing people.
