Meet Filipe Oliveira | Co-Founder of PoBo Lifestyle

We had the good fortune of connecting with Filipe Oliveira and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Filipe, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is always linked to how far you are willing to take your life/business. Throughout my carrier both as an employee and entrepreneur, I came across many challenges where I had to make a decision that could drastically change my future. Those decisions always come with a certain level of intrinsic risk. Should I keep the ball lower, or should I take the leap to the uncertain? Well, it varies a lot. Social studies say it’s influenced by your own nature as a human being, your personality. In my case, risk-taking was always pondered. Mostly considering different scenarios. Worst case scenario vs best case scenario. In other words. What’s is in it for me? What’s the return? What could I lose? The answer always comes based on three elements. My belief/gut, My business acumen, My fear. Note that fear is extremely important and there’s nothing wrong with it. Fear keeps you grounded somehow, and the belief drives your passion. Both combined have driven us (my wife and I) to launch our PoBo Lifestyle Business. A strong belief in our convictions/passions married exclusively with our own financial resources. Prove the concept, test the market, and then move step by step. Every conquest leads to taking the next, increasing the risk, increasing the exposure capitalized by the short-term gains. one by one.

What should our readers know about your business?
Coming from an entrepreneur’s family, a business education background, an MBA, and a creative mind, all together opened my horizons significantly to make me able to drive a business. The journey’s not always easy but so rewarding when you win. Meaning, the feeling of self-accomplishing and the flavor of success are really powerful. However, many times is hard, frustrating, demotivating, but then you overcome it, and suddenly you are sailing again. Every cloud has a silver line! Some people have the know-how. some others the I-don’t-know. Well… put both in a blender and you become an entrepreneur.
In other words, use your learning, your background, trust your gut, risk the leap to the unknown, and… Voila! You have your own business. That’s what my wife Joana and I did with PoBo. We identified a gap in terms of supply from beautifully designed objects with the effortless European elegance within the US market. We blended Joana’s skills and her natural capability to communicate the brand concept, my creativity/handy skills with our business experience/vision and we brought PoBo Lifestyle to life. PoBo became a status, a true lifestyle in the way you surround yourself with exclusive and unique pieces that make your life prettier. PoBo is a statement. PoBo is the “Je ne Sais Quoi”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take him/her to “Boulderite” weekend. Wake up on a Saturday and go for a hike in the flatirons, do the entire loop which takes you about 3 hours climbing/walking. Embrace the Colorado nature which is unique and fill your lungs with fresh air. Once you have done it, walk down and stop by the Brooklyn Pizza on Arapahoe, grab a slice on the go and head home for a reinvigorating shower. Now it’s time to feel the Boulder vibe and its unique charisma. Head to Pearl St. stop by the Laughing goat and get a coffee and sit outside taking the sun in while you look at the mountains and all the people that rambles around. Yes, Boulder has the magic of combining an interesting hippy vibe with a charming way of living. Cute stores, beautiful people, and most part of the days blessed with a magnificent sun. Then cross to the other side of the street and do a mandatory stop at the Paradise Found Records Store. The coolest store in Boulder. Spend a generous hour there, discover new discographies and walk out with a bunch of them under your arms. Now, the cherry on top of the cake is when you get back home. Order in some nice sushi, open a bottle of wine, put a record spinning, and just indulge in the feeling of being. Be here, just here. Tomorrow, well… tomorrow we may be heading up to Loveland ski area driving by the canyon road and get to do some skiing. It’s just 1h30 away and the path through the canyon is breathtaking. It’s Colorado, what else…

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It may sound like a cliché but I wouldn’t be fair if I say it differently. First, to my parents who provided me with an incredible education, moral values, and ambition to go further. Secondly to my wife Joana who is my “partner in crime”, my lighthouse. Incredibly positive, intelligent, and most of all with an outstanding emotional intelligence that helps me a lot to manage my anger when something doesn’t work out the way I expected. The third shoutout goes to an intangible factor that has also helped me a lot throughout my life. My Failures. We learn more from mistakes than from successes. They leave a mark that builds up your journey to overcome your shortcomings.
