We had the good fortune of connecting with Finley Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Finley, what inspires you?
When I consider what inspires me I am struck by the enormity of the Earth and the profound connections between individuals and the natural environments we inhabit. As a queer interdisciplinary artist based largely in rural Colorado, I find endless inspiration in the landscapes of the Great Plains and the Intermountain West. These areas are not just backdrops; they are living histories filled with personal narratives and emotional ties.

My artistic practice is driven by the belief that every person has unique stories tied to their experiences in “nature”. I aim to capture and communicate these connections through my work in any media available to me. In my video collages specifically, I interplay simplified natural forms with evocative scenes, creating a dialogue that invites viewers to reflect on their own memories of ‘Place.’

Ultimately, I am inspired by the hope that by sharing and honoring these memories, we can foster a deeper sense of care for our shared environment. I believe that when we recognize the sacredness of natural spaces, we are empowered to protect them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My practice revolves around an intimate exploration of the environment, particularly through the lens of personal connection and memory. What sets my work apart is my interdisciplinary approach that facilitates experiences that invite viewers to engage with their own relationships to nature.

My journey to where I am today has been a blend of passion and perseverance. While I have encountered challenges—such as navigating the complexities of an interdisciplinary practice and finding my voice in a competitive field—these hurdles have spurred my growth. From this incredible planet we live on I have learned the importance of resilience and adaptability.

What I want the world to know about my practice is that my work is rooted in a sincere desire to evoke a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world. I believe that by sharing our personal stories and memories, we can inspire one another to foster a collective responsibility for the environments we cherish.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely start out with a trip to Dandy Lion Coffee or Honey Hill. From there we would probably make a trip to the Clyfford Still Museum, or if it’s warm-a nice trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens. If luck was on our side there would be a Collective Misnomer screening we could attend to round out our time together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give the deepest gratitude to the incredible women in my life. To my grandmother, who nurtured my love for both the world and art. To my mother, who has been instrumental in building the solid foundation that supports me today. And most importantly, to my pre-teen—their presence has fueled my ambition and drive to reach where I am now.

Beyond those mentioned here there are my deeply beloved friends, mentors, students and patrons who I owe immense gratitude to.
