We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabby Ring and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabby, what inspires you?
Many of my pieces are inspired by the harder experiences I have had in my life. When I am struggling with something heavy in life, I work through those emotions by imagining visuals to represent them. I think it’s important to reflect on the darker and uglier things we feel in life because they teach us something. I also find inspiration in nature, anatomy, and the female form. I think there is an immense amount of beauty in each and they inspire me in different ways.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Almost all of my pieces include a skull and that’s simply because they fascinate me. In college, I learned a lot about skulls and how you can understand more about the animal through the details in the skull. Ever since then, I have remained interested in skulls and that shows in my art.

I started painting when I was 15. From there, I taught myself more and more over the years through trial and error. I have also sought honest feedback on my work so I can continue to grow.

Professionally, as an artist, I still have a lot of growth to do. I think I have just found my niche and now I need to expand. In the near future, my goal is get commissioned for more pieces that align with my style and to continue to sell my prints and stickers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to Ouray for a few days so we can explore the nearby mountains. We would hike to the Upper Blue Lakes on Mt. Sneffels or to Ice Lake in the San Juan Mountains. I love staying in Ouray because it is a small, beautiful mountain town that’s busy, but not too busy.

If my friend is not interested in hiking, I would take them to the Denver RiNo art district to admire some street art. Then we would go to Denver Central Market for a tasty meal, maybe a coffee too. Finally, we would end the day at Hamburger Mary’s with a drag show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to recognize my incredibly supportive wife, Victoria. She has been with me through the hardest times in my life and continues to love and support me through everything. She inspires me with her passion to capture beauty and her drive to constantly grow as a photographer. Victoria is always encouraging me to create more and reach a larger audience to spread my work. She’s an amazing life partner and I can’t wait to see what other adventures we have together.

I would also like to thank my mom and dad, who always encouraged me to push myself in everything I do. My dad recently died after a long battle with cancer and I know I will be turning to art to cope with the pain and tremendous void in my life. Thank you, dad, for loving me so fully, expanding my horizons, and showing me how beautiful life can be. I love you, always.
