We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Dashiell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, what makes you happy? Why?
As I’ve gotten older and think about what my career “should” look like, you ask yourself what makes you happy? So often we are taught to go to school, grow up and get a job that will pay your bills. This can be satisfactory to some, but I think I’ve learned that doing what YOU want, is going to truly allow you to be happy. For me, feeling fulfilled and satisfied in my personal and work life is very important to me. Getting the opportunity to go out and travel and take photos and then getting to share them is a really great feeling. This is where passion becomes reality and I think we all strive for that on a certain level.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It certainly has been an interesting journey thus far! I think what’s most exciting is the fact that I have come across the opportunity to turn my passion into a career. Even being featured in this magazine is pretty exciting and only inspires me to keep on going to see what new potentials I can reach. Seeing the goals I can accomplish makes me proud of myself for sure! The small and big wins are all worth celebrating.

Each photographer’s perspective is their own, which is what makes each person’s work stand out in different ways. Part of my love for photography comes from the fact that for example, five people standing next to each other can all take a photo of the same subject but will all come out with different shots, based on perspective, angles, shadows/highlights, etc.

I think what sets me apart from other photographers is the use of bright colors in my photos. I also really enjoy Macro Photography and getting close up shots of nature, particularly flowers. Macro shots can really showcase the sheer beauty that nature has to offer, sometimes that the naked eye cannot see.

Getting to where I am today certainly had its challenges. I think its about first realizing the fact that you can make the thing you love, into your life. For amateur artists wanting to showcase their work, we are lucky that we live in a world where social media and marketing yourself can make anything happen. Consistency is key!

I think I would want the world to know that you can do anything you set your mind to, you just need to believe in yourself. I come from an extremely small town in New Jersey and think of myself as a very ordinary person. What you give is what you get, use your energy to make your dreams into reality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great question. I love the Mid-West and would absolutely recommend traveling out there. Colorado Springs, CO in particular has captured my heart. Colorado Springs spans across 195 miles and has so much to offer.

This big city has many different sections to it, all possessing their own unique beauty. I would definitely recommend seeing Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Crystal Creek Reservoir, Red Rock Canyon, and much much more.

Im a huge outdoors hiker and you really can’t beat the views that Colorado offers! Also, Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road are pretty amazing scenic drives.

If you want to relax, do some shopping & have a good bite to eat, check out Ruxton Ave! This street has many cute shops to browse. In the summer, get yourself a fresh squeezed lemonade bucket (32oz) for $5 at Totally Nuts & Company. In the winter they offer various hot chocolate flavors and hot apple cider!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Believing in yourself is key! At the end of the day you are the driving force of your success. Without you, no one can do it for you! Aside from keeping yourself motivated, support and encouragement from others is the icing on the cake and a great way to stay inspired. My grandfather, George E. Cox is a huge inspiration in my life and has helped me uncover my love for photography. We always bonded over taking photos and he has always been the best support and always encourages me to keep doing what I love. I definitely would not be where I am today without him.
