We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Balsick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrett, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
My legacy will not be about any business ventures, assets left to children, or gifts given to others. I hope, and strive daily that my legacy be one where people remember me and my family (wife and children) as a strong Christians who used our platform, businesses, and resources in a way that brought others to a relationship in Jesus Christ through serving others well. A legacy is not built without tremendous work, a little bit of luck being prepared to take the right risks at the right time, and good businesses. So in the mean time, I am continuing to use the talents God has given me to grow the businesses all while knowing that we are on this earth for one reason.

The legacy of the few small businesses that have been blessed, seem to be an earthly reward which is nice, but at the end of the day I want to be told “Well Done Good and Faithful Servant”. One tangible way I am working daily to bring my legacy to fruition, is to simply serve people to the best of my ability in all of these businesses. At B/K Ranch I want to be certain that we are caring for our animals and stewarding God’s land the best way possible. Balsick Burgers is a platform that we are able to provide the best burger in the region and we want to serve our customers with a product that is much better than our competition. B/K Antiques LLC strives to bring new to market antiques to unique platforms in a fun way, also devoting some time on their live Facebook sales to say a prayer. Double Diamond Auctions, of which I am a partner in, is a great platform to serve lots of people both buyers and sellers in unique ways. We are a faith based company who is out to help our clients in the best way we can. Compass Financial is where I am able to help others steward their resources in ways best suited to them. B/K Property Management strives to bring quality housing to the market and works to steward these properties to the best of their abilities.

What should our readers know about your business?
B/K Antiques LLC- This is a small antique business that travels the country finding antiques and bringing them to market in various ways. We have been blessed by both a large nationwide network of pickers, sellers, and faithful buyers. This comes from work we put into to sourcing our products, the pride we take in selling our items, and the work that goes into shipping the items we sell. B/K Antiques Strives daily to find, revive, and place quality antiques in the right place for a reasonable price. Our main concern is that our customers are happy and receiving a quality product! We have learned many things along the way, but we feel the largest lesson we have learned is that this business is not about the stuff, but the relationships that we are able to make along the way. Meeting people from all over the country and being able to share stories with them is the most rewarding part of this business. We have been featured on Pawn Stars where we sold Rick a windmill which Rick’s Restorations restored! I think it was season 17.

B/K Ranch- We are a small family owned 6th generation homesteaded ranch. The Balsick family homesteaded North of Calhan in 1891 and the ranch has stayed in the family since then and we hope it makes it more generations. The ranch really grounds our decisions because we know we aren’t going anywhere and want to keep relationships with neighbors and the community good for the next generation. We raise angus cross cattle and hay. This is not an easy business, every single day there is something to do that is different from the last day. We are tasked as caretakers for lots of animals and stewards of lots of pastures and hay fields. We strive to make what we have better for the next generation. My generation (the 5th one) has it so easy it isn’t even funny. When they homesteaded, they would work at the steel mill in Pueblo during the week, and then come to their soddy and tend to the farm on the weekends. They used to raise Pinto Beans, Potatoes, Corn, Wheat, and Peas on the ground without any of the modern equipment we take for granted today. We saw a tax return of my great grandpa from the 1930’s when he made $750 for the year and $500 off the top went to a land payment. He lived on the $250 for the entire year. We have it easy and honestly as younger generations have forgotten about how hard they worked and how smart they had to be to survive the homesteading days. We want the world to know that there are still farmers along the front range, but we are getting pushed out, so we have to be creative in what we do for a living to survive and stay in business, because once a farm like ours is sold, it is not being replaced. And there are major benefits both economically and ecologically for not developing all the ground on the front range.

Balsick Burgers- Balsick Burgers is an offshoot of B/K Ranch. We are a custom meat business that sells only hamburger. We offer what we think as the best hamburger there is. We grind all of the steaks, roasts, stew meat, and trim pieces from our heifers and make delicious burger. This is one of the creative ways we have had to adapt as a ranch to stay in business. Plus we see a large trend back to regionally sourced foods and this is a great market with so many people on the Front Range, we are able to attract new customers. Eventually this business will hopefully market all of the cattle we raise at B/K Ranch.

Compass Financial- My full time passion. This business is the most rewarding business I have had a chance to be a part of. There were a lot of learning curves, but it is great to be able to help people steward the resources they have been blessed with. The biggest challenge of this business is making sure people know that this is my main gig, even though I have a lot of other things going on, I make the most time for this out of any of the businesses I am involved with.

Double Diamond Auctions- Double Diamond Started in April of 2022 when Todd and Alicia Natale of Simla teamed up with my wife Bailey and I to get this business rolling. It has been very successful and a blessing for all 4 of us to be able to impact and help a large number of estates, people moving, and people downsizing bring their items to market. It has also been great getting to know our faithful buyers and seeing the joy they get from the items that are brought to market. We hope to be able to serve the community for many years to come. We have had a lot of challenges in starting this business, but the main one is figuring out how to grow fast enough for all of the requests we get from people to help them sell their items. We are continuing to tackle that issue at this time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend comes to Calhan to visit for a week, we are going hunting, 4 wheeler riding, we are probably going to be doing some kind of work let’s be honest if you come to the farm, you get to work whether you want to or not. We will also probably go check out the paint mines park just south of town and our harrisville pasture which has some of the best views in Calhan. You can see the entire Rocky Mountain Range from the Denver Rockies to the Twin Peaks down South. It is so relaxing up there when you can literally see for hundreds of miles.

Oh and we would have our CNO cook us up some Balsick Burgers with cream cheese on them. And we would probably go eat at Roosters Grille on hwy 24.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe all of the Credit to Jesus Christ. He has blessed me with a few talents that I hopefully am using to glorify him and grow his kingdom.

After that my wife is my rock and supports most all of what I do and she is the CNO (Chief Nutritional Officer) of the family and all of the businesses, she has the amazing gift of hospitality and I like to help her put that on full display along with raising our 3 wonderful young children, Josie, Elsie and Raydon.

My parents Adam and Kristin play huge roles in all of the businesses helping where needed usually more than they ever wanted. But they are generationally minded and understand how important working hard now is for the next generations.

Also I want to thank Tye Amendt for giving me a shot and having faith in me with Compass Financial. He mentors me, is always there when I need help, and helps me refine some of my crazy ideas.
