Meet Gavin Crowson | Photographer & Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gavin Crowson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gavin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It started with some curiosity and thanks to some classes has turned into a career. In high school, I took a few art classes and instantly fell in love with photography. Over the last six years, however, I have learned that the feeling I get once I create something isn’t the most important.
Seeing people’s reactions to the work I have done for them is. The reaction and messages I’ve received from clients motivates me and has a feel-good effect. Knowing I’m creating and preserving memories for others is amazing, I remember going through photo books with my mom when I was younger and seeing her relive some of her favorite moments and memories. Knowing I was able to help someone or a family be able to do the same is a feeling like no other.
When it comes to personal projects too I believe that it is extremely important to have something you can work towards and feel proud of. Creating art is a great way to exercise that. I feel that the challenge and feeling of completing is something everyone should try no matter the project or medium.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Something I’ve been proud of through the past six years is that about four of those were spent self-teaching myself through YouTube videos. Yes, there was a photography class at my high school where I learned a lot but there is so much more to being an artist and freelancing. I also don’t like to back down from a challenge if I get asked to do something I’ve never done before artistically I don’t like saying “no sorry I have never done this before” to someone. Something more recently, I moved to Colorado from Chicago so having to leave my comfort zone and clients to a completely new area was tough but one of the best things I could’ve done. Here I’ve been fortunate enough to work with CU Athletics Digital Media and work with some amazing professional artists and creatives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being based in Boulder there are endless things to do just in that area but my favorites would have to be. Lost Gultch for some relaxing sunrise or sunset views, Boulder Canyon for rock climbing, and both local theatres for concerts. For meals, some of my favorites are Snooze for breakfast, Illegal Pete’s, The Sink, and Bar Taco.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, Angie Crowson, and my high school photography teacher Joshua Hoering. The amazing photography community and group called Chi Shooters who’ve helped me grow and meet so many other photographers and friends.
