We had the good fortune of connecting with Gemma Aguayo-Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gemma, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When creating my blog, everydaylatina.com, I wanted a place where I could record and pay tribute to my family’s stories, our recipes, and traditions. It is an expression of my passions, trying to be the best mother, wife and daughter I can possibly be and at the same time a place where I can share my experiences in hopes they can benefit, inspire and help others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have lived many professional lives from public relations, to Latino marketing, to theater, to bilingual elementary education. Four years ago I decided to leave my job as a teacher to stay home with my kids. It was after my first year as a stay-at-home mom that I decided to start everydaylatina.com as a creative outlet. After extensive research, courses and a lot of time spent online, I learned how to create and launch my blog. As a mom of 3 kids under the age of 7, it is not always easy to find time to work on the blog. It requires a lot of goal setting, planning, organization and late nights. However, I know that sharing healthy and traditional Mexican recipes is not only important for me but for so many others. The comments and messages I receive from people who love what I am sharing is absolutely amazing and means the world to me. Ultimately, my family’s support and belief in me drives me to continue to do this. I want to honor my family in the work that I am doing and celebrate the beauty of my culture.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The beauty of Colorado is definitely the mountains. I am particularly fond of the mountains in Southern Colorado around the San Luis Valley. I would definitely take my friend down there. The town of San Luis is small, but has delicious Colorado Mexican food and so much culture. We would visit the Great Sand Dunes, stay at a VRBO near the Sanchez Reservoir and enjoy the beautiful views Colorado has to offer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I like to say that Everyday Latina is at the heart of it an online love story to my parents. My mom and dad not only sacrificed everything to leave Mexico to give us a better life, but they are my inspiration, mentors, teachers and friends. They are incredible cooks who have taught me everything I know and their support and knowledge helps me continue with this venture of growing and continuing my blog.
