We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerry Melendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gerry, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always done freelance photography and video work throughout my 30-year career so having the mindset of always being available to clients and their needs is a priority. Starting your own business takes time, especially when you’re trying to build a client base. Networking is crucial as is finding a niche. Some photographers focus on portraiture. Others on food or product. Whatever you’re passionate about is what you should explore. Developing a unique style will also separate you from the pack. Finding other photographers to network with and build relationships also helps. Especially when starting out. I made sure to talk to other professionals and found mentors in my field to learn from. Learning the business side of photography is also crucial. There are books on the cost of doing business and how to price your photography that can help.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background is in fine arts so I definitely bring a unique, creative eye to my work. I have a gift for being a good story teller as well. My goal is always to push the boundaries and give the client something that surprises them and stands out from the pack. Although my first love is still photography, I’ve grown to love video and filmmaking. I’ve learned that you are most creative when you feel uncomfortable or challenged. That’s when you push yourself to be better. I also believe in collaboration and gain valuable insight by getting to know the client and their needs. You never stop learning so be thankful for the talented people you come across. Learn from them and always try to soak up their knowledge.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well my son goes to the University in Boulder and I love just walking down Pearl Street and checking out downtown. Some wonderful restaurants and shops along that stretch. The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse is fun and I love both sushi spots on Pearl. Nearby, T/aco has a great taco Tuesday.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t have a specific shoutout. Many amazing people have shaped my career. My family is on top of that list, for their patience and support. I began my career in documentary work and photojournalism and worked alongside some incredibly talented people. A few names that come to mind as mentors are, Tom Shanahan, Len Wood, and Tim Dominick.
