We had the good fortune of connecting with Grayson Certain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grayson, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is something my old boss used to tell me often. And he is still someone I look up to and consider a mentor. That quote was, anything one man can do, another man can do. Now I know that quote is from a 90’s movie called The Edge about a man who is attacked by a bear and defeats it. He would tell me, “kill the bear”. And to me that means if somebody has done something that I think is impressive or shouldn’t be possible, it’s totally possible and there’s no reason why I can’t also do something that might be considered impressive. or something I may have previously thought wasn’t possible. And that is what excites me most about my job is when I can figure out how to do something and prove that it is possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a woodworker, and for the last several years I’ve been making most of my work from recycled skateboards. I started making “art” in 2014 by burning sacred geometry patterns in to plaques from hobby lobby and selling them on Instagram. As years have passed I have slowly collected a full shop of professional woodworking tools. Along with a portfolio of all different types of wood objects, from toys and games to dining tables and chairs to now when I’m figuring out how to build a boat out of recycled skateboards. Which is something I am very excited about. I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who has helped along the way by purchasing my work or told a friend about my Instagram page or even just liked a photo or left a comment. It all helps and I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without it. I love my job and I can’t wait to continue figuring out how to push myself to crate better things.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite things the Denver area has to offer are Red Rocks, I love going to concerts with friends here it’s the coolest venue I’ve been to by far. Clear creek in golden is one of my favorite places to relax and cool off in the crisp water and it’s a blast tubing down it with friends.
Edgewater public market is one of my favorite places to eat especially with a big group of people because there are so many options so everyone will leave happy.
Rino art district is always a cool place to bring visitors to check out all the cool street art and there are lots of cool businesses all around that area

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from the glass art scene. Here in Denver we have a pretty large and active glass art community and I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever had because of it. Particularly Eusheen Goines, not only is he one of my best friends he is one of my biggest inspirations and I look up to him a ton for his incredible artwork along with his way of building everyone up around him and always being a positive light and good influence. Also my old boss i mentioned before John Jones, he’s a chiropractor back in KY where I grew up, he was a good mentor to me back then when I was just working for him cutting grass and landscaping. And he is a good mentor to me know when I need advice running my own small business.
Also Ryan Rehbock of The Crown Collection, he was down to host me for my first art show and that night changed my life and really made me feel like an artist. That show proved to me that I am capable of doing things I never thought I could before.
