We had the good fortune of connecting with Gretchen Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gretchen, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Dedication. I made a choice back at the first of the year that I was going to make my instagram ( The Mindful Nomadic) a brand and I wasn’t going to quit until I accomplished what I felt was successful. Through constant learning, dedication, and never giving up or playing the comparison game, I have dedicated my time to growing my following, providing real life tips and information for those wanting to live the nomadic lifestyle. Sometimes it’s inspirational, sometimes it’s plain REAL and raw life, but it’s beneficial to those getting into this lifestyle. I would never want someone to think living a nomadic life was all perfect all the time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I did not always dream of being a content creator. I mean back when we started this nomad lifestyle I had no idea content creating was even a thing. However, after diving into this nomadic community, I realized that instagram was where it was at for like minded people to share their wins and struggles as they go about their journey on the road. I began becoming dedicated to my page while providing real life details of places we have explored, things we do in maintaining our Rv, and how we live with 5 kids in 300 sq foot. We don’t have a huge Rv for our large family, we didn’t have tons of money to sink into this at the beginning of our journey. However we started with what we could afford in our budget. We feel like we are set apart because we want people to see that you don’t have to be rich to live this lifestyle. You can afford to do it in any budget with any size family. It’s about the desire to make this lifestyle work.
We have definitely faced our hardships from our black tank falling out, to water leaks, and even breaking down in a big city where we knew no one. However, we have learned that there are good people out there who are willing to help you get out of the jam you are in, it’s about persistence and finding those people. We also realize that there are issues in any lifestyle, living on the road with less doesn’ t make you exempt from problems. However, most of the time you can problem solve things yourself and with a little help from youtube. If you are dedicated or this lifestyle then you will be determined through any hardships to continue making it work. We know this lifestyle has brought our family so many joys and experiences and even when things get tough, we remind ourselves of the great memories we share because of this life on the road.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was to take my best friend somewhere, it would have to be Moab, Utah. We would make sure to visit the red rocks and trails of Arches National Park, along with Dead Horse State park, and don’t forget Canyonland National Park . At Arches National Park, we would hike to the windows and take in all the views, then go check out the petroglyphs. We would walk the streets of downtown Moab and do a little shopping while eating at the food truck vendors. One afternoon, we would drive down the back roads after a rain checking out all the waterfalls made from the rainfall. At night would drive out to the open land and lay out under the stars and then head back to the campground for a campfire with s’mores.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
After choosing this lifestyle, we started diving into YouTube to get all the details on what we needed to know about living full time in an Rv. We started watching Nathan and Marissa from Less Junk, More Journey and they inspired us that we could do this.
