We had the good fortune of connecting with Gudboy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gudboy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Boulder, Colorado. My house is in a nice little neighborhood surrounded by beautiful trails, parks, and water. It’s really a little paradise. Growing up here, I think a lot of the fun things I did with friends involved getting into nature. At a younger age, it was hide and seek in the trees and skiing a bunch. By highschool, my rebellion was kicking in full blast. I have some very fond memories of ditching class and going to the mountains. My friends and I loved just talking and being outside.

As well as this, growing up, my parents were always big supporters of me and everything I did. I am very grateful because anything I wanted to try was always met with excitement. My family is incredibly musical and that was (and still is) awesome to be around. While no one other than me is pursuing music as a career, the radio is ALWAYS blasting new music the second I get downstairs. I go to shows with my parents which is super cool and I think my Dad is the biggest music head I have ever met.

I think all of this had a big impact on me as I got to the age where I started to think more about my future. I went to College both for Economics and eventually Jazz Piano. I decided to drop out because I realized that I should do what I love and can help the most people with, rather than trying to make the most amount of money. So far, that’s what has made me feel so alive and happy!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artist project is called “Gudboy”. I make music inspired by youth, psychedelia, cartoons, and nature. Sonically, I would say my current sound is hip-hop based electronic music! What sets my music apart is the stories I try and tell through it. I have lived in some pretty crazy places and gone through some things that have taught me a lot. When I am in the thick of it, emotionally or physically, I find that writing music is the best way for me to express myself.
It has taken me quite awhile to get to where I am at, that place being the beginning of my career!! I’ve been making music all my life and producing on my laptop for about 5 years now. I would say it has been the farthest thing from easy but honestly doing anything other than what I love sounds much, much harder.
Some lessons I have learned along the way are that things will come but not always in the “package” you are imagining. I had this dream of making an album in Hawaii when I left LA. Well, I got lucky and moved to Hawaii and got offered to produce an album for an artist out there. The thing was, I didn’t have my own laptop so I used his software. I lived in a shack inside of a greenhouse with no running water (or plumbing…). The album was definitely not my normal type of music and yeah nothing was what I expected. It was SO AMAZING though. I got exactly what I was hoping for I just didn’t know that was what it would look like.
There’s many more lessons like that but most of them can be summed up to, let go and trust the process.
The world will learn more and more of the Gudboy story as it gets written. I hope to inspire others and make wonderful music that does to others what music has always done for me. Make me feel alive!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long trip to Boulder would be quite the time. I’m going to say we are in Summer here just because that is my favorite time to be in Colorado. First on the itinerary is going to the best lookout in Boulder. If you go up Flagstaff, maybe a 1/4 mile past the restaurant, there is a parking lot on the left. There’s a trail with some really big rocks that you can walk down. After a bit, if you climb to the other side there is a massive red rock that is quite the challenge to climb. Getting up there is a bit scary but the payoff is so worth it. I love just sitting up there and talking. It’s a very spiritual place.

After coming down the mountain I like to stop at the Boulder creek and jump in. Then, dry off and go to The Rio for some lunch. Next stop, I like playing pool at The Downer (Sundown Saloon) and getting a pitcher of PBR. Thats a day right there.

Other than that, some hot spots I like are going to are Red Rocks (duh), driving to small towns in the mountains (shoutout Nederland), and going to local breweries, of which, there are way too many to name.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I’d love to shoutout. First and foremost, my parents and siblings. I’ve put them through a lot and they’ve been by my side the whole time. I want to shoutout therapy and all of the magic it has had on me and my life. Some specific people, Coach Mo and Art Lande, both mentors of mine in completely different ways who taught me a lot about being a man, being myself, and making art. Lastly, I want to shoutout all the people in my life who believed in me even when I didn’t have anything external to show for it. I have been working at this a long time and there’s been so many ups and downs but the people who have stood by my side (you know who you are) mean the world to me and I wouldn’t be able to be where I am now if it weren’t for their support.
