We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Burgo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The support and belief from my family is the sole factor behind my success. My family has confidence in me when I struggle with it, and they push me to leap outside of my comfort zone. If I need a push, they are already building up the force to go behind it. They never fail to lift me up and challenge me to be the most successful and intentional artist I can be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been fascinated with the anatomy of humans. I started drawing because I was bored and wanted to try to create a realistic eye. After that first eye, I craved being able to draw humans in realistic ways. I taught myself to recognize features and recreate them into almost photo-like pieces. Once I “mastered” that, I realized I had no true flair to my style. Between trying to develop a new style and sliding into the niche of the newly-popularized wedding painting, my look began to arise. I now create semi-realistic paintings with a minimalistic flair to them.
Throughout the process, I have learned to take paintings one step at a time. I am easily intimidated, and a blank canvas can be chaotic to stare at as an artist; learning to focus on bits at a time allows me to really create my style and turn lines, smudges, and dots into something that resembles life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is my first go-to. I will plan a day out of breakfast at Snooze, a walk around garden of the Gods, and a shopping break in Manitou Springs. While I’m not much of a shopper, Manitou has so many unique stores that everyone can find something personal at. The day ending in fondue at the Mona Lisa ties everything into a perfect day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Greyson Cory, deserves the credit for encouraging me in my career and believing in me most.
