We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Strianese and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, how do you think about risk?
What someone views as risky depends on what factors they’re bargaining with. When I think about risk I think of my emotional well-being and what I’m willing to bet as far as my peace of mind is concerned. If you had asked me this question ten years ago, I’d be giving a much more literal answer. I’ve taken many risks according to some people. I’ve moved coast to coast on a whim, I’ve had wild lovers, I’ve switched careers here and there. Today, I’m more comfortable in a more calculated, structured life than I was before. Now my biggest risks feel like trusting myself, leaning into healing myself and my trauma; softening into my skin and taking a deeper look at how I’ve wound up where I am today. A winding, adventurous journey, albeit a quiet one.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work an office job Monday through Friday, 9-5. I’ve tried to make my artwork my number one gig at different times but I don’t make enough in sales to support myself. I also experienced that the hustle of getting my work out there got in the way of enjoying the process and the therapeutic qualities which make artmaking so important to me. Art can be quiet and personal and doesn’t have to be for capitalistic gain. Receiving money can be a nice exchange for a painting but it’s not my focus at the moment. My art is a reflection of my inner landscape – mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Focusing on the financial goals of artmaking just doesn’t feel right for me at this time. I’ve refocused my creative impulses inward and I’m working on building my technical skill as well as expanding my vision on how I wish to express myself more fully on the canvas. Maybe one day it will change, but for now I’m satisfied.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I had a friend in town from Manhattan earlier this year and one of the highlights were drinks at El Five’s fantastic bar with their amazing city view. My boyfriend and I spent our anniversary dinner at Safta which inspired me to get an Israeli cookbook. Anywhere with international foods or crafty cocktails (bonus points for creative mocktails) are good bets for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to take this opportunity to show appreciation for myself. I find this version of myself here, peaceful and happy. I’m grateful for the woman I am.
