We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Caldera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I actually didn’t want to start a business, ever. My husband and a couple of close friends kept telling me to start my own social media business and I would continue to tell them no. I began taking on a few clients on the side and my husband continued telling me to start my own business. Eventually, I reluctantly agreed. In January of 2018, I filed for my LLC and decided that if I was going to have my own business, I wanted everything to be on my own terms. I wanted to work specifically with only women, to help them with their social media and be a person who would encourage them and inspire them along their journey of also being a business owner. In 2018, I was pregnant with my 3rd child so I also wanted the freedom of still being able to work from home, to be with my kids and have the flexibility to take time off to be with them, volunteer at their schools, take them to their extra-curricular activities, etc.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that I am very proud of is my personal growth throughout these 5 years of being a business owner. I have done a lot of work on myself through therapy and self-practicing and have truly set some amazing boundaries for myself and my business. Also, in 2021 I had my 4th baby and really struggled with postpartum anxiety and my business took a HUGE hit. By the end of 2021, I was ready to call it quits on the whole thing. My husband really encouraged me to continue with my business and in 2022 I really focused on rebuilding my business, focusing on myself and only my business, my confidence, etc and I had the best year ever in my business!
I think what sets me apart in my industry is one, my branding is unapologetically and very pink! With my services, courses and content, I don’t focus on teaching my audience how to create content just to go viral, get the likes and followers. I focus on real women who are also moms, run their own businesses, have a 9-5 and don’t have all the time to create content 24/7. I focus on approaching Instagram from a realistic stand point where you can create your content and be present on that platform a reasonable amount but also feel comfortable and not guilty about putting your phone down for a weekend and not checking your Instagram at all.
A few lessons I have learned the past 5 years are:
-Never work for free or a discount
-Don’t allow people to disrespect you or your work
-Social Media isn’t the end goal, living your life freely and comfortably is
-Stop worrying about other people’s opinions when it comes to anything you do in life or business. Their opinions aren’t paying your bills.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to visit Boise, Idaho, I would first recommend that she comes in the Summer because you have to literally pull me out of the house in the Winter. I would start off every morning with hitting a new coffee spot in Downtown Boise. Some of my favorites are Broadcast Coffee, I order the Disco Pony, Acafe and Push and Pour. We would go hike Table Rock, Camel’s Back and I’ve been dying to hike Cervidae Peak. We would have lunch in Downtown Boise as well and dinner at Crave in Eagle. I would take her to float the Boise River, go walk around The Village at Meridian, take a day trip up to McCall to have coffee, breakfast, maybe a spa day, hang out at the lake.
We would also hit up some bars in either Downtown Boise or Downtown Meridian to have a night of a few drinks and dancing!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband. He has really been the driving force behind me starting my business and he is always encouraging me to push for my goals and what I want. He sees my potential and challenges me in all the best ways to keep going and not give up.
