Meet Heather Mcbroom | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Mcbroom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, why did you pursue a creative career?
Ever since I was in my early teens I gravitated towards the arts. Whether it was music, theatre, drawing or photography, it’s always come naturally to me and I enjoy learning new skills. I was always carrying around a digital camera to take photos in class or out at the mall, and my friends and I would do impromptu photo and videoshoots. The love for pursuing something creative and the gratification of a final product brought to life has always been there for me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I finally decided to open my own photography business after directing and shooting photo sessions for my corporate job. I’ve always been behind the camera in my marketing career, so starting a side-hustle doing something I’m passionate about seemed like a no brainer.
I think what sets me apart from other photographers in the area is I enjoy capturing authentic dates couples are on. I’ll set up some poses here or there and give some prompts, but I love couples being their authentic selves and enjoying the company of their partner. The end results of these photos are raw and I think tell a better story they’ll get to look back at one day instead of some stiff portrait.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think starting the morning off with a hike is a Colorado must. I’d take them to North Cheyenne Canyon Park to hike the Seven Bridges trail and see Helen Hunt falls. Hummingbird watching here in the summer is incredible. Then maybe grab lunch at the Ivywild School to try some of Colorado Spring’s local brews, like Bristol Brewing Company. From there walking around downtown Colorado Springs to support a lot of the small local businesses like Cronk Art and Curiosities and maybe shoot a game of pool at Crooked Cue.
Colorado Springs is full of hidden gems and small businesses. Whatever you’re looking for we have.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Jimmy for finally convincing me to just go for it and start my own business. I’m an overthinker and a perfectionist, which hinder taking action sometimes. He always helps walk me through my thoughts, my worries and fears. He’s also my hype-man when I’m making social media content, which I love when I’m second guessing myself.
