We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Mellish and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The attributes I wanted for the Pink House were : Affordable, Approachable and Community. I want people to feel that they are always welcome in our store. It’s a place to come and say hello quickly or stop by and hang out for the evening. How we present ourselves is often hidden because we are intimidated or don’t feel connected. I just want people to come in, find a cute sweater or a local artisan and feel happy and inspired when they leave.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve spent more than 25 years in technology sales, but my career hasn’t followed a straight line—or a traditional playbook. What sets me apart isn’t just longevity in a fast-moving industry; it’s how I built my path: through relationships, resilience, and a willingness to walk through doors before I knew exactly where they’d lead.

I didn’t come from a large family or a built-in professional network. There was no safety net or clear roadmap. Early on, I learned that if I wanted independence—and the ability to support myself—I had to create my own opportunities. That meant relying on friends, colleagues, mentors, and peers, and being intentional about building genuine connections along the way. Networking, for me, was never transactional; it was about trust, curiosity, and showing up consistently.

My career has been shaped by saying yes to challenges, even when they felt uncomfortable or intimidating. I wasn’t afraid to take risks, raise my hand, or step into rooms where I didn’t yet have all the answers. I learned quickly that growth doesn’t come from waiting to be invited—it comes from being willing to walk through open doors and figure things out as you go.

Was it easy? No. There were moments of doubt, steep learning curves, and times when the path forward wasn’t obvious. But those experiences built grit, adaptability, and confidence. Over time, I developed a reputation for being someone who could connect people, build momentum, and turn opportunity into results—skills that have served me across every chapter of my career.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a single title or accomplishment, but the career I built on my own terms. One grounded in independence, integrity, and relationships that last. I’ve proven—to myself most of all—that you don’t need a perfect start or a predefined path to build a meaningful, successful career. You just need the courage to step forward, the humility to learn, and the determination to keep going.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1/ We would go to all the coffee shops in Louisville! I don’t drink coffee but all my friends do! Then we would head out on a 5 mile loop around Davidson Mesa, we would come back and have lunch at South Street Market. Then we would hit all the stores in Louisville including my own but first: Old Friends, Eleanor, Acme and then stop at the Pink House. We would go have drinks at Por, dinner at Zucca and we have been known for a nightcap at Henry’s. That’s just one day but there are so many options.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my husband and my family. They are the ones who support our business whether it be showing up for events, a stop by after school or helping fix a door handle. I never want my kids to think it’s too late or too hard. My girlfriends have also been a life long source of inspiration, support and connection. There is no better feeling than standing in your own business and watching your friends engaging, laughing and even starting their own businesses via my store.
