We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Fry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I started out in a technical vocation, working in a science lab for a chemical company on the gulf coast. I always knew it wasn’t for me, but I was coerced over and over again to pursue something ‘practical’ that would make decent money and not leave me hunting for the next gig. This was completely unfounded advice as a job like that comes with its own risks, typically to life and limb. I realized within a year that I was not cut out for it and that I had to go back to school for a degree that made sense for my own motivations and I’ve never had that hard of a time finding a job in my creative field.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have only recently begun to explore who I am as an entrepreneur. How that comes to live and plays out is hard to plan, and for me at least, has been a process of exploration. Right now, I have combined my four passions into one, integrated practice. Brand Development, Digital Design, Photography, and Creative Writing. For a long time I believed these interests were all separate parts of me, but I’ve realized the power they hold as a united force.
My primary focus for freelance work right now is to support minority businesses owned and operated by BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized groups with a vision. My compensation is on a sliding scale for that reason. Locally-owned small businesses support their communities, and I’m here to support them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Meow Wolf – Not overhyped, extremely fun, tons of inspiration to be found! Denver Botanic Gardens – great way to get steps, get some sun, and see local flora.
Bluebird Theater – Cozy & close to great food.
Middleman – Misfit Snackbar inside Middleman always has the most unique rotating menu.
Local Markets – Any hub of local goods, food, drink, and entertainment has my vote.
City Park – great sunset views, summer jazz, nestled between the zoo & science museum.
City O City – A must for elevated vegan food & great vibes.
The Learned Lemur – For lovers of creepy curiosities.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My most memorable and valued mentor was my first creative director, Katrina Kowalski, who now owns her own business in Golden, CO called Superganix. I owe much of my growth in skill as well as confidence to her guidance over nearly four years. I also think someone with a significant impact on me as a student at the University of Houston was my fiction & poetry professor, Christopher Brean Murray, who is a fantastic poet, reader, and advocate for emerging writers. It also helps that he has a great sense of humor and an approachable attitude. Between the two of them I feel like I have become an individual capable of expressing my own style of creativity both for myself and for clients.
