We had the good fortune of connecting with Ipecac and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ipecac, what do you attribute your success to?

We’d say the most important factor behind our success is our friendship and the mutual respect we have for each other. While our guitarist Ariadnee started the band, it took several iterations before settling on the current lineup. We’re so fortunate to have met one another and that we click so well. Our relationship with one another really is the bedrock of what we are able to do and without it, this band wouldn’t work or be possible. Following that, the next most important factor behind our success is our unique product in the Denver/Boulder market. From our sound to our look, there are not many bands doing what we do, but because of what we do, we’re fortunate to be able to cross genres and play with a ton of the different, amazing acts that are relevant in the local scene today. For example, we consider ourselves heavy alternative rock, but we can also fit in with the local punk and pop punk scene that’s so huge right now or the metal scene or even with jam bands. We’re really lucky in that respect.

Also, the make-up of our band is unique as well in the Denver market. With two males and two females making up the band, especially on the heavier end of the spectrum, we feel like we set ourselves apart from other bands out there while at the same time, providing a product that is entertaining with a high dollar value ratio. Our primary goal is to entertain and blow minds and give people their money’s worth. We think we’ve been pretty successful with this formula, recently winning Denver Westword’s 2022 Readers Choice for Best New Band!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

As we said previously, our music is pretty unique in the Denver/Boulder market. We’re so proud of the sound we’ve been able to cultivate and foster. Being just a 4 piece, everyone in the band plays such an integral role. Filling every corner of space within our songs takes work, but we think we’re able to do it pretty successfully. We’ve definitely learned to appreciate what each of us brings to the table and utilize each respective skill set to the max. We all have common influences, but we also have different and unique backgrounds and we’re fortunate to be able to pull from all of that to create the music and performance that people seem to be receptive to.

And honestly, the creative process is not that challenging for us. Ariadnee and Tayte pretty much always bring a riff that we use to build each song around. They’re always coming up with new stuff, so there’s no shortage of ideas on the music front. And then Kanyon always just has this innate ability to pick out the perfect rhythm that fills out the idea and provides the foundation for that idea. And lastly, Isabella is incredible at selecting a vocal style, melody and lyrical content that just seems to fit to round out the song. Usually a song idea develops really quickly. We’re very fortunate in that regard.

As our percussionist, we’re so lucky to have Kanyon Dickerson in the band. Good drummers are so hard to find, let alone incredible ones like Kanyon. He hits hard and has amazing technique and skill that really suits our style, while at the same time also has this incredible ability to keep metronome like time song after song, even through extended sets.

Tayte Eubanks is our amazing bassist. He’s such a technical player and pulls ideas from so many different genres having such a diverse background of styles and influences. We sort of figured out early on that not having a second guitarist in the band really created a need for Tayte to fill out the space and make us sound whole. He really is the cornerstone of our sound as Tayte plays way louder than most bassists we know and is always running his rig through an overdrive pedal. We like to call him our lead bassist.

As it relates to vocals, Isabella Osborne is incredible. Their range and voice control is massive and they always seem to know where to add dynamics to the story they’re telling. Lyrically, they never place limits on themselves and are able to pull from so many different influences, whether it be literary, theatrical or personal. Stylistically, they have this uncanny ability to take what you would normally think wouldn’t work and make it seem tailor made to the song. It’s crazy. And they’re a super dramatic and physical performer when we play live, which adds the perfect touch to our shows.

As the guitarist, Ariadnee Ziady, or Rodnee as we call her, brings in such a massive sound. Her background is really rooted in the rock and metal that is the bedrock of Ipecac’s melodic tone. She plays exclusively through vintage Randall Amps to get the signature Ipecac sound and she’s just an awesome guitarist. Her leads and phrasing are incredible and she always seems to know what to do to finish out our songs. And as one of the few female lead rock guitarists in the Denver scene, we’re really psyched and fortunate to have her.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shows, shows, shows!!! We’d take a visiting friend to see all the amazing shows at all the incredible venues around town! From DIY’s like Seventh Circle to places like HQ, Lions Lair, Globe Hall, Larimer Lounge and Lost Lake etc… even including corporate venues such as Summit and the Marquis Theater. There is no shortage of great music to see in this town and we’re so fortunate that way. A week just wouldn’t be enough!

And places to eat? OMG, from LOHI to LODO to RINO to North and South Broadway to Colfax, you could spend a year and not be able to eat at all the incredible places in town. We especially love places that support local music, so for example Illegal Pete’s on Broadway is a big favorite!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow, there’s too many to mention! So many people have supported us along our journey and we’re so grateful to all of them. If we’re naming names, we definitely have to say, The Rocket Surgeons, B4B Talent and Entertainment, Rocky Montaño Photography, Sonder Management, The Venue, SRBoyer Photography, all the amazing other local promoters who gave us a shot, the scene in general and of course, our friends and family without whom Ipecac would not have even gotten off the ground. It really does take a village!
