We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaclyn Baer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaclyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic and creative career because I wanted the freedom to work for myself, build something on my own terms, and prove that creativity can be a sustainable and fulfilling path. Beyond that, I want to inspire young girls to believe in their artistic talents and show them that they, too, can turn their creativity into a thriving career!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as an artist has always been rooted in creativity—whether through photographing breathtaking landscapes and couples in love as an adventure elopement photographer or designing and sewing lightweight art bags and pouches (My company name is Sälka). Creating with my hands and turning my ideas into something tangible has always been a passion, and I feel incredibly lucky to make a living doing what I love.

It hasn’t always been easy—building a creative career comes with its own set of challenges, from self-doubt to learning the ins and outs of running a business. But through it all, I’ve stayed committed to my craft, continually learning, evolving, and pushing forward. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that persistence and adaptability are key.

What sets my work apart is the heart and passion I pour into everything I create. Whether it’s capturing the emotion of a moment through photography or designing functional yet artistic pieces, my goal is always to bring beauty and meaning into the world. I want people to know that creativity is a powerful force, and with dedication, it’s possible to build a career doing what you love!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, I love this question! If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure we had the perfect mix of adventure, creativity, and relaxation.

We’d kick things off with a few days of hiking my favorite trails—ones that lead to stunning waterfalls, wildflower meadows, and breathtaking mountain views. We’d camp under the stars, create art inspired by nature, and take time to meditate among the trees. Mornings would start with coffee by the campfire, and evenings would end with storytelling under the night sky.

After soaking in the wilderness, we’d head back to town for some cozy and creative city exploring. First stop: my favorite local bookstore, packed with art books and inspiring reads. Then, we’d grab coffee at a charming café that doubles as a plant shop—because nothing beats sipping a latte while being surrounded by greenery. Of course, we’d also visit my favorite art supply store to stock up on new materials to fuel our creativity.

Throughout the week, we’d mix in a little bit of everything—checking out local galleries, trying delicious food at hidden-gem restaurants, and maybe even catching some live music. The goal would be to fill the trip with inspiration, creativity, and connection—just like all the best adventures should be!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my childhood best friend, Karen. She has been with me every step of my artistic journey—from creating together as kids to helping me get into my high school art class. She has always been a big supporter of my work, just as I’ve supported her in her own art journey. Having a friend who truly understands the creative process and all its ups and downs is such a gift, and I’m so grateful for her!
