We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Coates and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve never been someone who liked being confined to a set schedule or routine. I needed something that allowed me freedom of schedule, location, and creative control. I wanted to build something from the ground up that was a reflection of my creativity and passions.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Shaped by Sports is a collective of passionate sports fans who wanted to create a down to earth, sports centric network. The idea began with co-founder Max Spolsky, who wanted to create a podcast focused on telling the stories of everyday individuals that were “Shaped by Sports”. The concept expanded further when Marketing Specialist & Entrepreneur Jacob Coates had a vision of expanding Shaped by Sports from a single podcast to a network of podcasts, blogs, social media content & more. We have since brought on more likeminded contributors to host podcasts, write articles, create content, and help build on dynamic culture that we envision for our Shaped by Sports network.
We really want to create a community of sports fans where everyones input is valued. We’re very interactive, and call on our community members to voice their opinions. Even though we’re not all pro athletes, we’ve all been Shaped By Sports.
I’m also the owner of a marketing agency called 1707 Creative – providing affordable services to small business owners. This is my main income source at the moment, but I plan to grow Shaped by Sports into a fully incorporated business as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve only lived in Montreal for a year, but have really taken advantage of our great location in Old Port during that time. We love the 1800″s architecture of the Old Port, and highly recommend spending some time exploring the local cafe’s, restaurants and businesses of the area. I’m a vegetarian, so naturally I love Burger Fiancé, Bloom Sushi & LOV which are vegan restaurants. Also a huge fan of a local Gastropub that features Indian cuisine, called Le 409.
If you’re into Sports, catch a Habs game at the Bell Centre. Peel Pub is my favourite sports bar in the city.
And though it’s kind of touristy, the view of the city from Mont Royale is worth the climb up the stairs.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is too many people I need to give credit to. Even some of the people who I did not have great relationships with. I know there was a lot of people who didn’t think I’d amount to much, and that really helps fuel my hunger for success.
And of course I’m very grateful to my family for their continuous support. My partner Jasmine is also a huge driving factor for me. She is an entrepreneur herself, and the hardest worker I know. I’m basically just trying to keep up with her!
