We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacques Gerber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacques, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business came from thinking through these questions: What do I love to do? What am I good at? How do I want to do what I love? Why do I want to do what I love? Once I answered those questions (with the help of asking my friends and family) it was sort of a plug and play. I knew that I believed in the influence that video has, and I knew that I loved seeing people relive and retell their stories. Organically then, wedding and engagement video was a great avenue to launch a video storytelling business. I will add that it takes time to sit down and count the cost before launching a business, but once you make the initial financial investment, you reach a point of no return, put one foot in front of the other and keep going through the process that you have laid out before you.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the way I approach making videos is what sets me apart from others. There is a genuine love for the process and the end product. The beginning of every project is the meet and greet with clients where I will ask a bunch of “getting to know you” questions. This helps me understand their story, taste, aesthetic, beliefs, values, etc. Then from there I ask what “has to” be in the video, and study the place that I am filming at alongside the schedule of the day. Once I have spent some time envisioning, writing out potential shots or flow of the video I almost always already have the final video in my mind as I shoot the wedding or engagement. This then allows the post production to be super efficient to where my clients can get their video very soon after their event day.
I got to where I am today professionally simply by word of mouth, consistency, rebranding and trusting the process. What I have learned about this type of business is that it really comes down to being good at listening and communicating; being on top of what you can control (study your art), and then putting in the work, one foot in front of the other. It wasn’t easy to start, and this is actually my second time with this type of business. The first time I had to stop because I was working full time in a different career path.
Along the way I have learned that it is better to give than to take, better to serve than to be served – plus you get to make the whole thing fun by reminding yourself why you do what you do. That’s what I want everyone to know, is that I love doing what I am doing and I believe in the benefits it has on relationships.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was visiting I would first take them to one of my favorite coffee shops: Sweet Bloom, Steam, Corvus, or Mango Tree and talk through some updates in life, maybe plan the week.
We would get breakfast at Snooze or Syrup, and then go for a short hike in Boulder, Nederland, or Golden. Probably find some sweet climbing spots in Clear Creek Canyon, or Eldorado. We would spend some time with the rest of my community out here playing some Spikeball or Volleyball at Wash Park or near my neighborhood.
One of the days we would go to Evergreen, play some golf, and have dinner/drinks at Murphy’s. We could also go to ride our bikes down Vail Pass if it’s summer time, or ride the Platte Park River Trail/Cherry Creek Trail to R.E.I and back. If it’s winter time we’d go Skiing at Winter Park or Copper.
We’d probably also cook some gourmet meals at home, relax by a fire in our backyard. Go to Church and invite some neighbors over for lunch afterwards. Call it a week.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It would make the most sense to credit any sort of success of OneDayFilmsCo to the God of the Bible. The reason being is that from Him we know what love is, and from Him we get the design for marriage. Therefore, beginning with the One who was at the beginning only makes sense. We also know what love is in that He laid down His life for His enemies and therefore I know what it feels like to be known and loved.
I would also accredit any sort of momentum on this project to my wife Kylie. She has taught me so much about hard work, sacrifice, encouragement, and daily commitment to the little things to see the big things through. As she says, “The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.”
One of my favorite inspirational wedding videography group is called “A Little Long Distance Films”. They are remarkable in capturing films and in storytelling.
And then really there has been a handful of mentors and people who have come alongside me who instilled a sense of confidence in my ability and vision for this business. They believed in me, encouraged and challenged me, and reminded me that if the project flops, it does not mean I am a failure nor does it mean I don’t have talent.
