We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake & Mike of Limitless Mental Performance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake & Mike, what do you attribute your success to?
Patience and persistence. These are the two qualities that have stuck out to us throughout the past two years of building our private practice. There have been numerous trials that have tested us and taken our attention along the way, but our approach has always been to stay focused on our ultimate goal and to remain open to the next opportunity.
We’ve done many presentations and workshops for various organizations and teams that haven’t necessarily panned out, yet we haven’t allowed that to diminish our motivation. There’s always something to learn and improve upon, and our approach continues to evolve. A key has been not to take it personally, and to remain open if/when the organization/team/individual is ready.
The keys to our success are doing good work, showing up on time, communicating in a timely manner, and being reliable.
What should our readers know about your business?
We train the brain. Essentially, we work with individuals and/or teams to build mental skills that help to better respond to the demands of a high-performance environment. Some of these skill sets could look like us training an executive board member to leverage mindfulness practices that can fit into their established pre-presentation routine, or it can be training attentional flexibility with a downhill mountain bike racer in the form of competitive attentional switching games alongside their teammates. It can be a series of breathwork training exercises geared toward improving a client’s CO2 tolerance and resting breath pattern, or it could involve teaching youth how to meditate in a way that makes it fun, challenging, and engaging. The list of applications goes on, and there is opportunity everywhere.
We have specialties in action sports, endurance sports, injury-rehabilitation/recovery, high-performance training, and adaptive athletics, and are also actively keeping the door open to other domains of performance. Both of us subscribe to mindfulness-based practices with an emphasis on purpose and living a values-driven life.
We are most proud of ourselves for sticking to our vision. In a world where there’s a lot of stigma and not a lot of understanding of what we do, paired with a lack of pre-established pathways post-graduation, we’ve successfully created our own lane through patience and persistence. We’ve also managed to create, maintain, and improve a healthy relationship as both business partners and friends. Our specialties, what we’re proud of, and what sets us apart are all interrelated, which is why we love what we do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Easy. Sassafrass for brunch. Leven Deli for a sando around lunch. Dinner at Blue Pan Pizza. Maybe a long walk around Sloan’s lake at sunset as well. You’re welcome!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gotta start with the parents. Shout out to both of our respective moms, dads, and siblings for their belief in us, their support, and their enthusiasm in our choice to take a risk on ourselves.
In addition, countless others supported us along the way. The incredible faculty and alumni that make up the Master of Applied Sport & Performance Psychology (MASPP) program at the University of Denver provided us with an incredible foundation of education. Steph Z. and the Winter Park Competition Center (WPCC) provided us with the opportunity to test our skills and improve our applied approach while working in a system where we found incredible joy. Our colleagues and classmates have been supportive of our mission and our creative expression which can be seen in our work. A few other noteworthy supporters include Danny G. of Arsenal Health and Fitness, Anthony G. of Uno Mas, Kelsey B. of Save a Brain, as well as Dan M. with Dew Tour.
All of these individuals have supported us in various ways, whether it was being open to sharing marketing materials, providing us with pop-up/engagement opportunities, having us on Q&A’s, or supporting our creative endeavors, they’ve all been an integral part of our growth.
