We had the good fortune of connecting with Hunter Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hunter, what is the most important factor behind your success?
One of the most important factors behind my success as a young creative & cinematographer would be crafting a trusted team of fellow collaborators. As I have gone through this journey of becoming self-employed and continuing to follow my passion for cinematography, the more I’ve realized just how important it is to surround yourself with great people. As an example, whenever it comes to a project, it can easily become overwhelming or stressful both before production and on-set. Having, say, a director I can rely on makes my craft so much more rewarding. Plus, the end product (commercial, music video, short film, etc) is taken to the next level with a good team behind it. Whether it be with skills involving inherent talent, efficiency, creativity, or even humor, I can’t emphasize the importance of surrounding yourself with people that push you to be a better version of yourself. My closest friends (who I usually work with on the majority of projects) contribute to the success I experience today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Funnily enough, I didn’t realize I wanted to pursue a role in the film industry until the second semester of my Senior Year of high school. I have grown up loving movies, and I am not ashamed to admit that I was THAT kid who watched every ounce of Special Features I could from the DVD menu. However, I only took one film class in high school as an elective, and at the time didn’t recognize that it was actually a feasible career path to pursue. After making the jump and starting my BFA in Film/TV at the University of Colorado Denver in 2018, I didn’t think twice. I am currently going on my 4th year of running my own production company, Thompson Productions, and it took a lot of failing and learning to get his far. Along with running a small-scale production company (learning about business logistics, marketing, client acquisition, etc), I am also constantly learning about the larger industry as a whole (which comes with experience and being on larger-scale film/commercial sets, equipment, film lingo, etc). My brand, both as a business and as a cinematographer, revolves around crafting imagery that moves people. I want my work to inspire anyone who watches, in whatever way that speaks to them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m all about food so I would definitely start there. I would take them to places like Snooze (an A.M. Eatery), Illegal Pete’s, and we can’t forget Voodoo Doughnut. I am also a big proponent for trying new things, so I would definitely want to explore new food places with them too. For other activities, I would definitely want them to experience the nature of our beautiful state. Hiking, snowshoeing, and mountain biking are definitely on the schedule. Lastly, I am a huge fan of taking the time to slow down in life, and I would love to have more lowkey experiences with them, which could look like a simple night hanging out on my friend’s rooftop watching the Denver skyline and sharing a drink (not without stupid jokes of course).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely like to recognize both my family and my girlfriend for where I’m at in life. Both my Mom and Dad have been so supportive throughout my entire life, especially with how rigorous high school and college have been. They raised me right in terms of always striving towards my dreams with a hint of reality thrown into the mix. They support me in my many endeavors and provide incredible advice for how I carry myself both as a filmmaker and as a human being. My girlfriend, Rachel, is that someone in my life that keeps me grounded along the way (who am I kidding though, we keep each other grounded). Amongst the stress of life, work, school, and all the things in between I can always rely on her to put a gigantic smile on my face and help me cherish the small moments, all while laughing at her corny jokes.
