We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Chihuan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The most important decision I’ve made to help me get where I am at is too never give up. If you want to be really good at something you must keep going even if you think you’re doing it wrong. In the end it’s just you and your art and after you die it’ll just be your art. So make sure that art aligns with what you believe in. I failed art class in high school and I never thought I’d be able to draw well but my persistence has taught me otherwise.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
People are amazed that I don’t go to school for art. In fact I’m a media student that loves film. But after high school I really took up making art and dedicated any free time I had to it. I basically taught my self multiple mediums and I always wanted to explore more. I get a lot of inspiration from my childhood and past experiences. I also like to merge my dream world with those experiences to really make the viewer think. I love to draw Skeltons since my mother had a ton of Santa Muerte shrines all over our house. The robe figure is my spiritual form in my dreams. It is also based off Dante from The Divine Comedy. All of this taught me how to build my own style and be consistent with my art. At this point you can tell if something was made by me because of its unique look. I credit that to me teaching myself how to draw and paint and not by a teacher or book. The self taught method helps us distinguish from the norms of the art world. I want people to know that A Deal In Hell is not just an art brand but a brand that will grow across multiple industries and I hope to be making my own films soon.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado is a place that I have extensively explored. If my best friend were to visit I would show them a multitude of stuff. I will mainly show them the outdoors because of covid but it’s not like Colorado is missing this. I would start up north and take them to RMNP and explore some of my favorite trails including Kong’s peak and Dream lake. We would go towards another lake that’s a bit mor East called lake Agnes. I would then take them all over boulder and make my way down south towards the sand dunes. Not mention stopping by the springs. My favorite place in Colorado has to be the sand dunes. The dunes are jaw dropping and will capture your heart as soon as you lay eyes on them. I would recommend trying to get there around sunrise to witness one of the most beautiful sights in your lifetime.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my biggest supporters has to be the museo de las Americas. They always believed in me and helped me setup booths for their first Fridays. They’re the one that told me to find my niche and to keep going as an artist. They see a potential in me that helped me keep going. .
