We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarred Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarred, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been someone who followed the beat of my own drum. I tried the conventional route by going to college and getting a white collar job. Sitting behind a desk and making money for a large corporation wasn’t in my DNA. I wanted to provide a service that impacted people’s lives in the best way possible, while at the same time creating a rewarding, ever-changing, energizing work environment for myself. What could be better than creating a dream space for somebody! Since everyone’s idea of a dream space is different it makes every day different for me. Some people may want the perfect entertaining space, some want a place to relax, another’s dream space is an entire home. No matter what the project, it’s ideal for me because it’s always different, When the chance to take over and grow our small family business presented itself I grabbed it. I saw it as a way to combine my ideas, drive, focus and communication abilities to build something great. I heard recently that in 2023 a record 5.5 million people started their own business so I am definitely not alone. Running my own business absolutely presents lots of challenges and requires a lot more time than working a corporate job but getting to know the people behind the projects is so much more rewarding.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my professional journey as many young adults do, by trying the college route. I already knew I didn’t want to sit behind a desk so I thought engineering was a way to get me what I wanted. I found out very quickly it wasn’t the route for me. I started exploring my options by working in the oil fields for a couple of years and while I was home I worked in concrete and plumbing. I quickly realized that I had an affinity for construction and focused my energy there. My skills shown through and I was quickly hired into a Superintendent position at a smaller commercial construction company. Through hard work and determination, I learned the commercial construction industry and was offered positions at larger organizations with more responsibility. Those experiences helped me to understand that what I really wanted was to help individuals and families achieve their dream projects. So while I was working commercially, I took over our small family business and started working on small residential projects. It took a lot of time but, in my opinion, was well worth it. I finally made the decision to, leave my corporate job and focus on my own business. I now do light commercial and anything residential, the difference being that I get to know my customers and their needs and how I can best fulfull those needs.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the outdoors so what we do it would be outdoors. We would start with a trip to Scheel’s make sure he’s well equipped. We would load up the camper with the ATV’s, Have Breakfast at the Urban Egg and head up to Steamboat for some camping, fishing and riding.
I love top Golf , Red Feather Lakes, Any Colo Mountain town. They are the best. I can strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. We love the Gaylord. It’s really hard to choose. There are so many great places to go in Colorado and with two small children we are always on the go.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is not one person who deserves the credit for who and where I am today. My parents, of course gave me work ethic. My dad, uncle, and father-in- law taught me skills that have helped me build my business. I have had coaches and teachers over the years that really believed in me and pushed me to be the best I could be. I carry those teachings with me everyday, in everything I do. I have the most supportive wife who encouraged me to take a risk. I strongly believe that I have learned something valuable from every person that has crossed my path. I take those lessons with me and, in my opinion, they make me a better, husband, father, son and business owner. It takes a village to raise a family but it also takes a village to be a successful business owner. I am blessed to be surrounded by so many encouraging and knowledgeable people.
