We had the good fortune of connecting with JaSew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JaSew, how do you think about risk?
It might sound cliche, but I really think it’s just another opportunity to learn. Risks can be the most frightening moments of our lives, but they can also be the moments that shape us into who we are. Taking the time to learn your voice and use it as instrument. Experimenting with every tone and tweaking it to implement your true personality via your music. Or even promoting yourself can be a big risk. There’s your inevitable fear of rejection that comes with it. Really getting feedback and criticism used to be a real struggle for me. Especially knowing that I’ve taken my own time and creativity in order to cultivate something for others to enjoy. I remember my first few performances in front of big crowds. The feeling was terrifying. But how can that hard work ever bare fruit if you never show it off. You’ll never know how high you can reach, if you never even give yourself the chance to begin with. Making myself uncomfortable has pushed me this far and I’m sure there’s so much more I’ll continue to learn. .

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Musically I’d like to think that I’m a melting pot of soul, hip Hop, r&b, rock and pop. The influence can severely change depending on the song that I’m writing. I think I bring a lot of energy to each track that I’m on and I always try to say something that people will remember. It took a lot of writing and a lot of moments where I really thought that I wasn’t good enough at my craft. Max was miles ahead of me when we first started this thing together. But over time I experimented and I found my sound. There were a few rough patches but overall I couldn’t be more thankful. OuterZone, our label is really a family. And not in the corny cliche type of way that you usually hear. We all contribute, we all have ideas, and everybody gets heard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Such a loaded question, but I’d definitely start with Moonlight diner on tower road. They have some of the best breakfast in can’t in Denver. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve order a mid morning streak there, and their omelette are top of line. Another good spot would be Crown Burger. one of my best friends put me on to it. They have these pastrami burgers that are to die for. Lastly there’s a Mexican restaurant in Aurora called señor Ric’s. I’m a sucker for Mexican food so you can’t really go wrong there. I highly recommend their chimichangas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly everyone who has been supportive and the to aid me on this journey so far.

My main source of inspiration comes from my cousin, Max Venus. He’s the reason why I took music seriously. From the beginning he’s made it easy for me to grow into my own artist. He’s the reason why I was able to curate my own style. In the early days, we’d just sit in his basement and brainstorm for literally hours on end. I attribute all my success to him. Secondly, but just as important is my brother and labelmate, AJ Blu. He’s been such an integral part of my journey into a sound closer towards pop and RnB. We all do business together but more importantly we just enjoy every moment together. The three of us just have so much love for one another. I know I can count on them for anything, whether that be musically or in my personal life and the day-to-day struggles. Iron sharpens iron constantly with us. I’ve grown as a man and an artist in so many ways, it’s really incredible. I also want to shoutout my best friend Shane. He’s taught me so much as a big brother and mentor regarding visual art, storytelling and life in general. I owe so much of my creative integrity to him. Every word that comes out his mouth is pure wisdom on a whole different level.
