We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Hargrove and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business as a solo massage practitioner with a passion for business and helping others. I knew first hand what it was like to work in my chosen field, and kept that in mind when I began to hire. I currently have 9 staff members, and my primary goals are to offer my staff a good living with benefits, and a positive work culture. Too often massage therapists burn out or are mistreated in our field, and I wanted to help change that. I also believe that when you treat staff with respect and put a strong emphasis on culture, it passes onto customers; a happy employee will make for a happier customer experience.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I grew my business from the ground up when I was 24 years old. I was just out of college and had about $2000 to start my business. I rented a small space from a chiropractor – it wasn’t pretty! I stuck with it, and used my grit and determination to get to where I am today. It hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes you worry if business will be slow this week or month, sometimes you worry you’re too booked up and turning away too much business. It can be a roller coaster, but you have to keep a positive mindset and get creative when times get tough. Knowing your business in and out, the market, and customer behavior is key! I also listen to my staff and encourage their creativity. Too often business owners forget that your front line workers are experts with the customers. It’s important to keep them engaged and give them the space to bring new ideas to the table.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many fun things to do in Fort Collins! My husband and I live close to the Jessup Farm businesses, and we love walking our dog over there to grab a beer or a bite to eat. We also try to go see a comedy show at the Comedy Fort at least once per month. It’s important to support local! We’ve taken visiting friends and family to these places as well as William Oliver’s – a must for any whiskey drinker, and of course any of the brewery tours like New Belgium or Odell’s are always fun for visitors!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first business book I ever read is probably still my favorite, and continues to influence the decisions I make today. I read The Go Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann about a month before establishing my business. It puts emphasis on positivity, expecting the best in others, and in giving. Essentially, the more you give to others without strings or expecting anything in return, the more you will get back. I fully believe this mindset is what has helped my business become so successful. I started my business with $2000, 5 clients, grit, and hope 8 years ago. Now we are exploding and seeing over 600 clients per month!
