We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Fletcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, how does your business help the community?
My business is an unorthodox one in that it’s largely based on social media and content creation. I have a YouTube channel with a little over 13K subscribers as well as other social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok where I create content.
The most fascinating (and exciting) result of that effort over the last few years has been the community it’s created. The impact is huge and has created a helpful, deeply kind audience of folks who are either looking to get into Overlanding (vehicle based exploring and camping) or are wanting to help others who are new to the hobby learn and enjoy it.
I try to create content that is extremely applicable to folks just starting out in Overlanding. Unfortunately, the nature of content creation is that, as you grow, you get better gear and you tend to forget the people who you served when you first started creating content. As a result, you alienate your audience and they no longer have a reliable source for helpful information that applies to them. Even though I’ve been doing it for a while, I am very intentional with continuing to create interesting and helpful content for folks that are still finding the hobby on social media.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m not focused on the super cinematic, extreme “offroading” type of videos. I more focus on educational and (hopefully) helpful content for folks looking for recommendations around gear, ideas for do it yourself type of projects, and budget minded tips for enjoying the great outdoors, without having to spend a ton of money.
Starting a YouTube channel is hard (especially if you’re like I was 4 years ago and had never shot or edited a video). Overcoming the challenges of editing, camera and audio equipment deficiencies, and more was difficult but the best advice I could give anyone wanting to get into content creation is to just keep doing it. So many creative, interesting people have started channels but after 6-12 months if their channels don’t take off, they quit. Just stick with it and keep doing what you love and you’ll get there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a ton of other great YouTube channels out there that I’ve learned from over the years. And more recently, I started a “Newbie Overlanders” Facebook group and it’s been fantastic for community, helping each other, and learning. So, thanks to all those other creators and Newbie Overlanders!
