We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Serrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, how do you define success?
Success for me is having purpose! With purpose, you ultimately fulfill what makes your life. When you are self-fulfilled you can be happy, enjoy things, have identity, and be at peace with yourself. Being successful is not always easy, but it is always attainable!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As MASTER KNIGHT, I employ cinematic visuals and offer creative direction through my services. My brand specializes in portrait & commercial photography, but I can do corporate headshots, weddings, videos, and more. I also have an exclusive 3D film portrait service that I believe nobody else offers in the state.

For me, becoming a photographer was an amalgamation of different things happening in my life. Back in 2014, I had bought my first camera (it was a Canon T3i Rebel) while I was in high school. I was taking photos merely as a hobby at the time. I got friends to model for me on my photoshoots while we were free; this timeframe was really when I first piqued my interest in portraiture.

It wasn’t until I became a sophomore in college (I attended CU Boulder) that I took photography more seriously. I miraculously crossed paths with a person who not only became one of my closest friends but also a creative partner I now work with extensively. That individual is Michael Johnson, known as “Cozy Dripp” by his music artist alias. We had a day where we talked about what we desired to do in life and how our talents could work together. We then proceeded with doing our first photoshoot together. Michael heavily encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, as I was still shooting in JPEG format with no post-production. So, I spent hours on youtube looking at how to edit images with Adobe software. It was at that moment I had fallen in love with the craft and developed my artistic vision. My surging enthusiasm and growing intuition fueled all my future photoshoots. I also made the switch to the RAW format at that point. Michael has my utmost gratitude for being a huge catalyst in my creative journey.

The crazy part about all of this is that I never really expected everything to turn out the way it did. I originally intended to go to college to further myself into medical school, not knowing I would find my true passion. I love helping people and acknowledged I could do that as a doctor. However, I never really felt I was entirely devoted nor prepared for a medical role. I knew that I could help others just as much as a photographer. That realization gave me my purpose; I can say with confidence that pursuing a creative career was one of the best decisions I have made. I move forward today with my business to empower my clients and teach myself how to be in the present moment.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d definitely take them to see Boulder. The city has so many beautiful views, especially Chautauqua Park. I would start there with them and head on the trail which is always a fun hike. If we wanted to see more of the mountains and Boulder’s cityscape, I would drive us up to Lost Gulch Overlook. The entire ride there is an experience every time. For food, we’re hitting Peckish on the Hill, as they literally have some of the best wings I’ve ever tasted. Right over is Kung Fu Tea which had solid boba milk tea drinks. Lastly, we would head over Pearl Street as it’s a vibe and cool place to hang around.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Major shoutout to my friends & creative partners: Michael Johnson (Cozy Dripp) and Eric Khat (E_KAYY). We have been at the beginning of each others’ journeys. Without them, I wouldn’t be at the level I am today. Many thanks to those two for helping me build such an amazing portfolio.
