Meet Javier Lozano | Photographer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Lozano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Javier, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been drawn to the arts. Growing up in a Mexican household, music was always a big part of our daily life. We shared laughter, pain, and history over music. I think that is why I alway wanted music to be my thing, even took classes, but I just couldn’t draw out the passion I felt other artist were utilizing to create their songs. For a long time I felt like maybe I wasn’t cut out to be an artists. It wasn’t until a little over a year ago that a good friend, Carlos Acuña, recommended I try out photography. I ended up buying a film camera off Ebay a couple of months later and after the first roll was developed at Not Another Film Lab I was in love. Since then I’ve been working on finding and creating my own style drawing inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn and Helmut Newton. I have also been working on projects to bring the art community together through collaborative art pieces.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Im a film photographer specializing in portrait and street photography, as well as an event curator as of last weekend!
I think that life experiences define a photographers eyes before they even pick up a camera. The lows, the hardships, the highs, laughs, and losses I’ve experienced are a big part of when I choose to take a photograph. Where I am now in my career I owe all to my friends, who have remained a constant source of motivation and inspiration. With their help and support I was able to curate a project and hold an event that involved 24 local artists collaborating on 8 unique art pieces from across three different disciplines (musicians, photographers, illustrators.) It definitely hasn’t been easy, I’m in my mid 30’s and I’m still learning to trust my instincts. But if there’s one thing I have learned is that if there is something you want to do, just go for it, but also be ok with it not turning out the way you planned. I want the world to know that its never to late to discover and follow your passion, just keep trying and learning new things. As for my brand Im just a guy with a camera who loves taking pictures and would like to share some of my future projects the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely hit up a couple of the coolest bars in the city like ESP, Yacht Club, Fort Greene, and Pon Pon. Catch a show at Larimer lounge (Fred Fancy or The Attorney) and some dancing at Beacon. For food, some sushi at Uchi, burgers at Bob’s Atomic Burgers in Golden, and for a night in some takeout from Taste of China. Mandatory cruise through Lookout Mountain to Red Rocks, then down to evergreen for some lake time. Isabelle Glacier is another must.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my mom and my son for being such amazing people in my life. Shout out to the homie Carlos Acuña for getting me started in all of this. Shout out to Fred, JMO, and Liz for always pushing me to grow, and letting me tag along to their shows and events. Shoutout to all the artists and everyone who took part in The Yearbook project!
