We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Lisle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, how do you think about risk?
To me, taking a risk is all about having self-confidence. It’s not trying to chase the next big thing before someone else, or come up with the newest idea before anyone else. Instead, I believe risk is daring to do what you want, what’s best for you, or what you believe in, despite what anyone else around you is doing or thinking. It’s taking the risk to be genuine to yourself, rather than following someone else or a crowd.
For me, the hardest part about taking risks, or living genuinely, is knowing WHAT I want, instead of what I think other people want or expect from me. In order to take that risk to be myself, I’ve had to be firm in my boundaries I’ve created for my business to remain true to my personal passions as an artist.
I’ve also had to actively shift my mindset towards abundance, rather than scarcity. When I focus too much on scarcity, I notice that I begin comparing my work to others. Instead, when I dare to just create art that’s meaningful to me, and to my clients, instead of what I think everyone else is doing, I feel so much more confident and capable as an artist, and I’m more fulfilled and proud of the work I create.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a photographer for 9 years now, and it’s been a wild ride. My business (and family) has moved 5 times in the past 9 years, so relocating and building a new clientele every few years (or sometimes just after 6 months) has taught me so many lessons that have shaped me into the business owner I am today. I create photographs of families and businesses that I dream of having of my own family. My work is lifestyle in nature, meaning instead of stiff, posed images, my work is created from a combination of guided posing or prompts, and natural movement and styling by each client. My photographs feel natural and genuine, and I strive to create heirloom images that capture the essence of each individual, and the connection they have with each other. I’m also always looking for new ways to enhance the story of a photograph, and usually that involves more color. Along with capturing genuine connection, I have fallen in love with infusing my work with creative elements that add fun, colorful, unique features to an image. For example, I use light leaks with film, and color gels with digital, to add a new dimension to my photographs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, we’ve recently moved here just over a month ago so I’m still discovering my favorite activities, but my bucket list is ever growing. My list primarily consists of all the beautiful hikes and delicious restaurants I want to try, as well as a lot of great family outings and activities! I love that there is something for everyone here. But, if you wanted to spend a day with me in Denver, we’d probably alternate the day between fun outdoors activities and food, with some art/museums thrown in the mix. To name a few items I enjoy, last week my family and I checked out Red Rocks and Roxborough Park, and absolutely loved both places. Soon I’d love to explore Lair O’ The Bear and Deer Creek Canyon down South. For date night in the next few weeks, I’d love to try The Pig & The Sprout or Illegal Burger. I also love getting new recommendations, so please reach out if you have a favorite spot!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh, I could list hundreds of people that have mentored, inspired, and encouraged me along the way. Honestly, the one person who has done it all is my husband, Matt. He was the one who gave me the idea to even start my business, and it was his belief in me, and vision of what I could do, that gave me the confidence to go out there and try. And now, 10 years later, he’s still my biggest cheerleader, my most trusted business partner, and the inspiration for the love and friendship I capture in my work during every photoshoot.
