We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanne Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeanne, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The world can often feel like it is on fire, there are distractions all around us and there are usually many people that truly need you to show up each day and be the best version of yourself possible. So, how can art make an impact on our community or the world?

I have noticed more and more that people are asking to retrieve the more analogue world that we have lost along the way in the midst of other “advances”. That collective cry to bring more analog back into our day-to-day life if where the artist lives anyways. It is one of many ways where the creatives can reach out their hands and bring society along with them. The artists are the noticers of the little things, the interpreters, the ones that write down what they see or what they wish they saw, the ones that know the value to their minds and bodies when we turn from our screens and make. Make anything.

My hope is that our business invites people into slowing down, learning and then ultimately to turn off everything and just create for the pure joy of creating.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a working artist for almost 20 years now and the biggest growth in my art is what I choose to observe, how I interpret it and what comes from that. Anything can be the thing that stops me in my tracks and I listen to what stops me. I take the time to notice what stopped me, create studies from it, look at ideas from different angles and want more than anything to create a true volume of work that is good and bad that will lead me to what is the best. I love that I know what is mine and how I process the work. How I show up in the work and why I often don’t. I can doubt myself but I actually know know know my process. I know what is me and how to bring that out in my art whether it is with paint, charcoal, clay or just a simple pencil. I can run away from it and avoid the studio. I can get distracted and not make the work but that is a whole other answer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have really enjoyed reading lately about other women artists and the journey of creating. We can have false narratives that run through our minds about what is normal or not normal as artists/women/wives/daughters/friends.

Recently I have read Art Work by Sally Mann, Daybook by Anne Truitt and The Writing Life by Annie Dillard. Each book was a gift and allowed me to see myself and my own journey with clearer eyes because they each shared so generously their own.
