We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Smither and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
There have been so many lessons along the way, but if I had to choose one, it would be the power of building the right team. Finding people who are eager to grow, innovate, and solve problems—and then trusting them—is everything. It’s not just about delegation, it’s about collaboration. When your team is aligned and empowered, it creates a force far stronger than any individual effort. It really is true: a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our company is Custom Professional Renovations (CPR), and we specialize in residential design/build remodeling. Our tagline is “Bring your home back to Life”—and that’s exactly what we do. We take old, outdated spaces and breathe new life into them with thoughtful design and high-quality craftsmanship.

What really sets us apart is the level of service we provide. Before this, I spent over a decade in fine dining, doing tableside service. I loved that world, but it wasn’t a long-term path. Still, it taught me a ton about hospitality and attention to detail—skills I now bring to the remodeling experience. Our goal is to WOW every client, every time. As I always say: “We show up and show off.”

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. In the beginning, I struggled with control—I wanted to do everything myself. But I’ve learned that real growth happens when you trust others and let go. As a small business owner, you wear a lot of hats, but you can’t wear them all forever. Learning to delegate has reduced my stress and given me back time to actually enjoy life again.

I also owe a lot of my growth to professional coaching. I worked with a construction coaching company for a few years, and they helped me build the systems needed to grow beyond just being self-employed. Now, I own a business that runs on processes—not just my personal hustle—and that’s an incredible shift.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This one’s tough—I’m great at planning construction projects, but my social life is more spontaneous! I try to keep balance, so I don’t over-plan everything outside of work. That said, I still love dining out, especially when it comes with that next-level service I used to provide.

Any of Denver’s top steakhouses are a solid choice for a great meal, but I’m just as happy with an amazing taco truck off Federal. If it’s winter, we’re heading up to Beaver Creek or Vail to chase powder. In the summer, it’s all about the outdoors—camping in the mountains, boating on the lake, hiking or biking local trails. And if there’s live music? Count me in. Whether it’s a concert in the park or an unforgettable night at Red Rocks, I’m always up for something adventurous, exhilarating, or soulful.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Mary Sue has been my right-hand since the early days—back when I transitioned from handyman work to our first basement remodel. She’s absolutely vital to the team, handling estimates, designs, material selections, and so much more. Her attention to detail in planning makes execution smooth for the whole crew. She’s a rockstar.

And then there’s Ray—my second office hire—who has gone far beyond what I expected of a project manager. He’s become an indispensable leader. In fact, I’m currently exploring ways to offer both of them equity in the company. I couldn’t do it without them, and they’ve more than earned their place at the table.
