We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey & Jamil Cooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey & Jamil, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We started the business as a way of positively engaging the community. We wanted to have fun with the people and we wanted to use our relationships with sports to do it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Peak City Athletics is a multifaceted sports organization that specializes in physical fitness training, sports consulting, and community events. We started Peak City in our basement with a plan to run a cash prize 3-on-3 4th of July basketball tournament. We launched the first event in 2015 with a budget of about $150.00. The event was a success and we eventually grew to a cash prize men’s 5-on-5 basketball tournament that we held on Memorial Day weekend. We called it the Peak City Summer Kickoff. It was a great event but the last one that we held was called off because of a problem with the electricity in the gym. We learned a hard lesson that day because we did not have a backup gym scheduled. We are hoping to bring that event back in 2023. After we got the tournaments running we decided to launch the training business. We were blessed with an amazing partnership with Results Fitness RX that allowed us to grow our training business and eventually open our own gym. While we grew the training business we also launched a consulting business that has allowed us to serve numerous professional and aspiring athletes.
One of the lessons that we have learned along the way is to stay true to who we are. Jeff always says “be who you say you are” and that has served us well in building a respectable brand. Our message to the world is, everyone has a peak, we are here to help you find yours. We believe that anyone with a desire to work hard is an athlete and we want to serve those people. There has always been people in our corners that saw the best in each of us and we try to use our business to shine a light on the best in others.. Our slogan from the start has been “How High is Your Peak”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost we’d make sure that we’d get a workout in a Peak City Athletics every morning during their trip. Most people like to stay in some type of routine when traveling, and why not do it at the best gym in Colorado Springs. Next, I’d make sure to take them to some of the staple attractions while here. Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs Incline, and Gold camp road city overlook. I’d make sure to stay in the downtown area because the food, drink, and hangout places are endless and all within walking distance. A food place that can’t be skipped over in this area is Luchals. The best southern food in Colorado Springs! Some of the better places to check out in the downtown area is the Olympic museum and also hopefully during that week, we could check out the professional soccer team (Switchbacks). Their new downtown stadium is great and the team is one of the best in the country.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would first like to thank our wives (Elizabeth & Aakanksha) for their love and support, allowing us to be aggressive in pursuit of our goals. We want to thank our parents (Jeff & Keshia Cooks) for their hand in growing us as men and for their unconditional love and support. We must thank Southeast Colorado Springs, that community has always participated and celebrated in everything our business has produced and we are products of that community. Results Fitness RX we would not be here without you, thank you for all that you have done, you deserve all of the good that comes your way! All of the athletes that have trained with us or participated in our events, we thank you. Mike Booze thanks for coming up with our slogan “How High is Your Peak”. Peak City is really the product of so many wonderful people that have loved and supported us in our journey.
