Meet Jenni Pruett | Interior Design Principal & Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenni Pruett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenni, how do you think about risk?
I have always been a bit of a risk taker, and while owning my own business was not my initial goal, it feels like a natural fit now that I am in it. There is risk in being the sole person in charge of keeping my phone ringing and risk in keeping all of my clients happy while keeping everything else afloat. On the creative side, being on my own means I have license to push the envelope farther than before, which means my clients are getting the best of what I have to offer. The reward is so much greater when the risk is there, it’s a huge motivator and it’s very true that when you are just outside of your comfort zone- that’s where the magic happens.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a full service Interior Design firm focusing on new build construction, large scale remodels and furnishings. Our work is primarily in Denver and Vail but has reached as far as South Carolina and Florida. Through my career I worked at several well known firms, but after having 20 years under my belt I was seeking a new challenge. I was approached by another designer to partner up. That partnership was short lived, difficult and ultimately failed, but I learned a lot – mostly what NOT to do! This launched my own firm as I had too many clients to do anything else. I learned a lot about myself, most importantly that the many things I was afraid to do on my own, as it turns out, I am actual good at and weren’t as difficult as I had perceived them to be. As a creative I love to try different styles and things I haven’t done before. I have been told that I need to find my signature style, I reject this as each project is unique and I feel deserves an equally unique solution for that client. While I do think my work has a through line woven in ( mostly the use of color and drama in a room) each project is tailored to the client’s aesthetic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s a lot to see and do here in Denver, during the week on a nice day, we can avoid the crowds and peruse the botanical gardens or have a picnic in Washington Park. As a designer, shopping is one of my full time activities and thankfully, I really do love it. My go-to’s are the boutique shops in the Highlands – the Perfect Petal, Ruby Jane & Strut all have lovely offerings and are delightful places to leisurely browse and pick up some gems. Also, I am a movie buff and to me the ultimate relaxation involves a movie & a beer so I like to hit the Alamo draft house. For evenings out I like the lively vibe of Rino, a drink at Ratio and dinner at Barcelona. The Berkeley and Sunnyside neighborhoods also have a lot to offer, a nice meal and cocktail here would be a drink at the Tatarian and dinner at Wildflower are both delicious and aesthetically pleasing. On a rainy day I would go to MCA for a nice dose of contemporary art followed by lunch at My Brother’s Bar (the oldest bar in Denver where Jack Kerouac was once a regular). On the weekend, a massage at the historic Oxford hotel & spa is a must, followed by the farmer’s market at Union Station and brunch at Ultreia.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that make my job possible and have helped me along the way: contractors, architects, colleagues and vendors. The design community as a whole in Denver are supportive and inclusive and I am honored to be a part of it. That being said, the group most integral to my success are my contracted production team: JLS Designs, they take care of much of my documentation, production and project management. Jen & Joan are former colleagues, so we have worked together for the better part of a decade and they function as part of my team seamlessly.
