We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I would say the most important factor behind my success is that I had parents who truly believed in me and always told me I could do whatever I put my mind to.

Also, my business was birthed during the recession when I worked for McKesson in medical sales and due to the economy collapsing sales were cut in half and I had two babies at home forcing me to make a change.

This is how my business was birthed out my my tiny apartment kitchen in Savannah, GA in 2008!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Jennifer Kathleen Sennhenn-Campbell and I own Designer Cakes & Confections.

I have been established in Colorado for the last 16 years and I actually started my business originally in Savannah Georgia back in 2008 during the recession.

My history is actually in the performing arts. I began singing in the third grade in our little school choir in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and then auditioned for a-cappella choir in high school and was also was heavily involved in theater.

My singing voice became more developed around 11th grade and I was a lead in my high school musical in 1996.

I continued my musical education and took from two Juilliard graduate professionals after high school and continued my education at Theater Arts in Tulsa (I was in a couple shows locally) and then joined the army in 1998 as a combat medic/EMT.

I would later audition for the 3ID Band at Fort Stewart and become a vocalist for 9 months and then audition for the Army Soldier Show in 2001 and would travel the world and perform for a year.

I got out of the army completely in 2005 after serving two active duty terms of service and I had met my husband John in 2001 at the Olive Garden before I went to the soldier show.

We got married in 2005 and Savannah and by 2007 I had had two children with another on the way and was working in medical sales for McKesson which was a great job, b it required a ton of travel and time away from home.

I had begun having an interest in cake design after Minette Rushing of Savannah custom cakes made our amazing wedding cake in 2005 (and she had just started offering classes in 2007 and I invested a pretty penny to take her first sugar flower intensive class).

The economy basically was in free fall in 2008 and my sales were cut in half. I decided to go out on a whim and use the rest of my G.I. bill to pay for Minette’s first masterclass at Savannah Custom Cakes and it would truly be the best investment I ever made. I found that I was good at visual art, not just the performing arts and fell in love with all things cake design and sugar artistry. My adhd was actually helpful for me at that time because I was OBSESSED at becoming a master at my craft.

From that relationship I would receive referrals and would build my custom cake business very quickly in Savannah. I would later move to Westminster, Colorado due to my husband’s job in the fall of 2009 and began to re-establish my business here.

I also became a Wilton instructor and taught at Michael’s for several years in Brighton Colorado.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to the 16th street mall and LoDi to eat at Ocean Prime Grill and The Mercantile and would take them to The Denver Art Museum, The Museum of Illusions and Meow Wolf.

We would definitely have to go to a concert at Red Rocks and head up to the mountains (preferably Breckinridge).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother Ann Sennhenn and my cake mentor, the amazing Minette Rushing of Savannah, Georgia
