We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Perlow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have owned several businesses over the course of my life. The first was half ownership in a contemporary craft gallery. My daughter was less than a year old at the time and having time to spend with her was really important to me. However, I also felt like I had something to prove so I joined to many boards and said yes to too many things. Even though I was overcommitted, I also carved out time for my child. Monday was my day off and until she went to Kindergarten, Monday was “Mommy and Charlie” day. After kindergarten started I would take her and pick her up from school almost every single day. Her school was within walking distance of the gallery we owned and even though we would often walk back to the gallery so I could keep working, we had a moment every day to connect and talk about the day. As the years have progressed, I have gotten much better about saying “no” and making time for myself. My daughter is grown and recently moved out of our house, so we moved out of the city and to the mountains so we can be closer to nature and hiking. 2022 has been all about living my best life. Working hard when that is needed, but making time for me. I have a two mile hike within walking distance of my office and am able to do that at least a few times a week over my lunch break. I think when you are able to take care of yourself personally, you are a better worker too.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
PS Art Consulting is a passion driven, national, healthcare focused art consulting firm. We believe in the power of art, and understand what a huge difference art can make not only in the healthcare setting but in all settings. We LOVE what we do and consider it as much a calling as a job. We work very hard to provide an outstanding service to our clients.
I have worked very hard to get where I am, and am at a place where I have found that working in pockets of flow, is much more effective than just sitting in an office all day. I try to be very purposeful with my time and energy, and make sure I get to be a priority too.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love City Park. The 8 years we lived in Denver, I walked or ran in City Park about three times a week. In the summer we were regulars at Jazz in the Park. We could bike to the park. We would set up a huge blanket and have a picnic dinner. I always felt Jazz in the Park gave me the opportunity to interact with a more diverse section of my community then my day to day life allowed.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Chris Stevens, has been both my partner in life and my partner in business. He has been my sounding board and supporter for over two decades now.
