We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer So and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by strong entrepreneurs who take risks and who fight for their dreams and goals. I find it so incredible to see strong women around me accomplish the things that they’ve always hoped for. It inspires me, and makes working hard for my own dreams and goals worth every moment. I’ve realized it’s important to believe in yourself; for belief is the key to success and the key to accomplishing anything and everything.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Looking back over my life so far; all I can say is, I’m so happy! Growing up, at the age of 3, I remember wanting to be a Ballerina; so my mom signed me up for dance classes. That sparked a passion inside of me. I fell in love with dance of all forms and that led to my love of performance. I was hit with a dream of pursuing a career acting. That was the drive behind my high school and college years; being involved in every single theatre show in high school and pursuing a Bachelor’s of Theatre Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Although, things did not turn out exactly as I hoped; they turned out the way they were meant to. At the end of my first semester at UNC, I was cut from the acting program for “not growing enough as an actor.” While these words still burn in my heart and are still painful to think about, it was a key moment that led me to my career now. I still have a strong passion for the arts, and I still act in shows, in and around Denver. I’m happy to still have theatre in my life, in any way! I am on the Artistic Board of Insight Colab Theatre, a company founded by pan Asian American artists that spotlights inclusive, innovative, and inspiring works to illuminate our shared human experience. It’s so rewarding to be involved in something so magical! Being able to welcome passionate partnerships with all and to cultivate emerging artists; it’s inspiring to affirm that anything is possible for anyone.
After college, I was looking for an outlet where I could still be expressive and where I could still be part of entertainment. That’s when Radio Broadcasting found me. This is my current career, 10.5 years and counting, and I love it! I say this career “fell into my lap,” because I acted on a whim. I attended a technical college, Ohio Center for Broadcasting – Colorado Campus (now known as Colorado Media School), and received a Certificate Degree in Radio Broadcasting. I’ve been a radio personality, a news director, and now a traffic reporter and producer at various stations around Colorado. It brings me joy, and I love my job!! I truly have found a perfect balance of all my passions! I got to where I am professionally, by not giving up!
I overcame the heartaches and the challenges of feeling like “I’m not a good actor,” or “I’m not worthy of this career”, by believing in myself. I’ve learned that not everyone is going to like me. Not everyone is going to like my acting or how my voice sounds on the radio, and that’s just life. What’s most important is that you don’t give up on yourself and you don’t lose sight of what matters most to you. If you can do that, then you’re surely to succeed in whatever you set your mind to. These life lessons have made me who I am today, and my love for the arts and entertainment have continued to push me towards opportunities that speak to me.
A recent development in my story, is my side business as a Young Living Brand Partner. The love and support I have in my life, has also led me to pursue other passions of clean living and wellness; giving love to others through education of this wellness lifestyle for their lives and their families lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m proud to say that I’m a Colorado Native!! I absolutely love this state! Whenever I have company in town, I always take them to my favorite spots around the city! A sample itinerary I’d do is:
DAY 1: My company arrives! Let them get settled, and enjoy an evening out to D-Bar Denver.
DAY 2: A morning hike. Lunch and beer tasting at Breckenridge Brewery. Visit Red Rocks before dinner in Morrison.
Day 3: Wake up early for our day trip and adventure to Estes Park, Colorado. — Rocky Mountain National Park/Stanley Hotel.
Day 4: Day in Denver!! — (This is open to change) Visit: The Denver Mint, the Denver Art Museum, and the Molly Brown House. Explore some Colorado Breweries. Enjoy an afternoon treat from Little Man Ice Cream and Dinner at Avanti Food and Beverage – A Collective Eatery.
Day 5: Pack for our overnight trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado! Leave early to make it to Garden of the Gods for a nice stroll. From there we’ll travel to Royal Gorge Bridge for lunch, zip lining, and other fun.
Day 6: Wake up early for a visit to Pikes Peak! — If the cog rail train isn’t running to the top, then take on the challenge of the Manitou Incline!! From there, we’ll make our way to Cave of the Winds for a fun tour! If time, hit up the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum. Following dinner, we’ll make our way back to Denver.
Day 7: Enjoy a restful morning. Make your way to Babe’s Tea Room for High Tea. Enjoy the day, and be sure to snag Dim Sum from Star Kitchen or the Empress Seafood Restaurant before your company returns to DIA for their flight home.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be the person I am today without the love and support of those who have impacted my life. Shoutout to my parents, my husband, and the incredible friend’s, mentor’s, and teacher’s I’ve had over the years who have inspired and pushed me to become who I am today!
