We had the good fortune of connecting with Jens Nielsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jens, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I tend to be pretty comfortable with risk. I left my home country at 23 to seek out new adventures in the UK and then the US. I have traveled to 25+ countries, raced mountain bikes, skied the backcountry, and taken many other personal risks. The personal risk I take has always felt manageable and within my control. When it comes to business, I am OK with calculated risk. I always look at risk-adjusted returns. The riskier the project, the higher the potential return should be.
I also ensure a good plan is in place to manage the risk. With patience, the right people on the team, and financial resources, most risks can be managed successfully.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is dedicated to helping people create financial freedom in their lives. I want to show there are alternatives to investing in Wall Street. We purchase apartment buildings around the country and partner with individual investors to allow them to participate in the benefits of apartment investing without having to find and manage their own properties. Our model provides a direct way for individuals to get exposure to real estate. While at the same time impacting communities through investing in improving the properties.

We have all heard the stories of a lack of affordable housing, so we take older, run-down properties and improve them to give our tenants a great place to live while keeping them affordable.

My other business is personal coaching. This business aims to help people find the Clarity, Energy, Courage, Productivity, and Influence to get the results they want in life. Many people feel stuck in their careers, relationships or simply don’t have enough joy in their lives. I take them through a proven process to get unstuck and live the life they were meant to live.
It is very gratifying to help people on a path to more joy and fulfillment in their lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When people came to visit me in Durango I would always start by taking them to Steamworks. That has always been my favorite restaurant to hang out. It has great food, beer and a fun atmosphere. After a good dinner and nights rest, we’d usually go mountain biking in the San Juans. I love those mountains. There are endless places to explore. You can hike or bike for hundreds of miles, or just take a stroll to view the wildflowers from Coal Bank Pass.
If people were more interested in history, then we’d go to Mesa Verde and tour the cliff dwellings. For people not familiar with the history of that area, Mesa Verde is a must see.
After a long day out, we’d usually go to 11st Station for some food from one of the many food carts, and some cold locally brewed beer.
For a longer visit, I would recommend spending time on the Animas River in the summer or skiing at Purgatory in the winter.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The first person that comes to mind is my first mentor in the real estate investing space, Gaige Sippy of Durango. He was the first person I contacted when I wanted to embark on this journey. He helped me understand what it meant to invest in real estate and connected me with my first broker, with whom I purchased my first property and later partnered on a property.

The other person that deserves recognition is my first High Performance Coach. He helped me realize I could make my interest in real estate and coaching a business. He coached me through the process of scaling the business and later quitting my job.
